Howdy,

I carry a money clip, not a wallet around.

Accordingly, I don't generally take my EDR card.

Accordingly, 90% of my fuel vouchers seem to expire.... despite me buying petrol.

So, last time I got Woolies Fuel, I tried to get the guy to type in my card number, showing him the Woolies App on my phone with my card number on it... but he said company policy is to ONLY scan in an EDR. He said it didn't matter if he scanned it on my phone, but he must SCAN it in, not type it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like I can find any Android Apps that create a Woolies Barcode Neatly.

I am now trawling through the Google Play store to find a barcode generating app.... but, I can't seem to find a free decent one. Plenty of QR codes, but.

Any hints?

Also, why on Earth doesn't the Woolies App have this feature? I have requested it, but.

FWIW, I just used an online barcode generator, saved the picture, sent it to my phone....... it looks alright. I'll give it a try next time I'm in Woolies.

There are some loyalty card management programs - Funnily enough I saw one a couple of days ago that others were recommending, and was on the market only 5 mins ago looking for it again.

The other option is to take a photo of your card and get them to scan that. You would need to have your phone on full brightness to work though I believe.

The back of my card is pretty munted (due to the times it IS in my money clip, it gets very scratched).... so, taking a picture won't really work. I couldn't get a good one using my phone camera.

If the bardcode generating picture doesn't work, then I'll try to get a replacement EDR card, then try to properly take a picture of my EDR card with an SLR... then put that on my phone.

However, it'd be bloody easier if Woolies just included it in their APP, like other companies do (see, eg, Event Cinemas).

Have you tried the keyring app? I used it a few times mostly without success on woolworths self check out systems. I think it worked once for me but for me the hassle of having to keep trying to scan it multiple times outweighed the benefit of not having to carry around the card with me.

Order a replacement card and you will get two key ring versions, cover one with tape and put it on your keying, problem solved.

The Tesco Clubcard has an app that generates a barcode that can be scanned in store. It won't work on the self service ones though.

Thanks for the idea.

However, my keys are very minimal - just three front door keys + car key.... no keyring at all. The 'pain' from carrying an EDR keyring around would be a pain in the cough...

I really don't understand why it's not an APP feature.

The EDR key ring card is very small, smaller than most keys in length, an alternative is to print the barcode off and stick it to your phone, again this could be quite small.

Hmmm, printing off the barcode and sticking it to the back of my phone could work...

I'll see if I can get an image to work, but, if not, then that is option 2.

I use the keyring app for Android. The real issue is most bar code scanners are laser scanners which really struggle to read bar codes of screens since they are highly reflective. So no matter how you get the bar code onto your screen, chances are the scanner will still struggle.

I've tried as well... It just doesn't seem to scan well.

Thanks for the tip. This will get rid of a card in my wallet.

For the OP, when you order a replacement card it gives you the option to print out a temporary card, it saves the hassle of generating a barcode to print out, you could do this and stick it to your phone/forehead/anywhere convenient... Personally, to get a copy I would just photocopy the card you have. If it scans now then I expect the photocopy would also work.

There is a great app called CardStar.
It is available on all the major smartphones and comes with heaps of cards preloaded (incl. EDR). For those that aren't preloaded, you can take a photo of the barcode or enter the card number and select the algorithm.

Now for the downside, screen-based barcode apps can only be read by OPTICAL scanners, not LASER scanners. From a customer perspective, these devises look the same but they cost the merchant more and so are not overly common.

I use CardStar successfully for my Hoyts Rewards card and Hhonors however on the few times I tried to get BWS and Woolworths staff to scan edr on my phone, it wouldn't work. Seems they use older style laser scanners.

One last option, for iPhone users, could be this: Geode from iCache! by iCache, Inc — Kickstarter
If it was available for Android I would have jumped on it in a second.

Before the keyrings cards were out, I carried a "photocopy" card. Had an old EDR card. Photocopied the card my wife carries, glued the printout to the old card. Voila, two identical EDR cards. So the photocopy or print out system would work fine.
