American Express[SUP]®[/SUP] Platinum Rewards Credit Card

I view this card like a slimmed down Platinum Edge card.
Great if you see little value in the annual free flight and prefer not to pay the $195 card fee.
You don't get;

  1. one free flight each year
  2. 3 points at major supermarkets
  3. charged $195 card fee each year
  4. 15,000 sign on points
You do get;
  1. $0 card fee in the first year. Fee is then $80 from 2nd year
  2. 2 points at major supermarkets
  3. 2 points at most petrol stations
  4. 10,000 sign on points
  5. free supplementary cards

Highlights

  • 10,000 Membership Rewards points[SUP]1[/SUP] when you apply by 2 February 2016, are approved and spend $500 on your new Card within the first 2 months of Card Membership.
  • $0 annual Card fee for your first year[SUP]2[/SUP] ($80 p.a. thereafter). Card Members who wish to convert their existing American Express account to Platinum Rewards will not be eligible for this offer.
  • The things you buy every day could get you rewards sooner. Loading up on petrol, even shopping at your local supermarket, could earn you up to 2 Membership Rewards points for every dollar you spend at major supermarkets and petrol stations[SUP]3[/SUP]
  • Earn 1 point per $1 spent everywhere else, excluding utilities where you’ll earn 0.5 points per dollar[SUP]3[/SUP]
  • A world of suprising extras - get access to made-for-you offers with special discounts, pre-sale tickets and enjoy the ability to pay with points with selected partners[SUP]4[/SUP]
  • Refund and Purchase Protection - we’ll repair or refund the cost of eligible items bought on your Card if they are damaged or stolen within 90 days of purchase[SUP]5[/SUP]
  • Online Fraud Protection guarantee - if you see something unusual on your statement, let us know as soon as possible and you won’t be held responsible for any unauthorised charges[SUP]6[/SUP]

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

Does this card qualifiy for Ascent Membership Rewards or is it part of the lesser value Membership Rewards Gateway program?

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

I understand it is Membership Rewards program. Amex state you will receive Membership Rewards points.

"Annual Fee: $0 p.a. for your first year[SUP]2[/SUP], $80 p.a. thereafter. Card Members who wish to convert their existing American Express account to Platinum Rewards will not be eligible for this offer"

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

Sounds a bit ominous if it doesn't explicitly mention Membership Rewards Ascent. Can you login and check your account, under Membership Rewards, it should specify it there?

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

It does specify points credit to Membership Rewards Ascent bluey.

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

Great thanks.

Great thanks.

How did you go blueythecat?

Just a reminder that this is open until 2 February 2016. I think that this is a great low cost entry into Amex and it still has a good points earn to boot. 10,000 sign on points plus fee free for 12 months, what's not to like.

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

You would have received 15k points by referral for the Plat Edge, but of-course you would not have received a fee free year. That alone is worth all the bonus points.
I can also refer the Plat Edge, but for someone on a budget who still wants good points earn the Plat Rewards offers great value.

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

Just bumping this up as offer has been extended to 31 May 2016.

Great budget card, only $80 a year with first year fee waived, free, gratis, nothing, niente, zip...
10,000 bonus points on sign up.
Similar points earn as Platinum Edge but much more affordable if you do not need the annual flight.
Note points earn is 2 pts at supermarket v. the Edge' 3 pts.

Just 3 1/2 weeks left to take advantage of this great budget amex. How many CC will earn 2 points for supermarket shops for just $80pa?
The first year is FEE-FREE and you can easily earn the small fee cost back in credits.
For that alone it is worth having in your wallet.

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

Very attractive offer, prozac, but I don't meet the income criterion; from experience I know that CC issuers are unwilling to assess SMSF or other pensions as income.

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

That's a shame cgichard, thi card has great points earn at supermarkets for such a small annual fee.
Have you tried applying for this one? May be different to bank issued cards. I use my accountant as source as I am self employed and other income and never been followed up. Mind you I do not apply for high end cards which this isn't.

No, I'll pass on this one. Income goes into 3 different bank accounts and after senior, pensioner and low income offsets the ATO assessment ends up being close to half that. Just too complicated to tackle in the 2 weeks before I go on holiday.

Re: Amex Platinum Rewards Credit Card - 1st year $0 annual Card fee, $80 p.a. thereaf

Enjoy your holiday cgichard. :)
