Hi All,

Going from Hanoi to Sydney via Singapore on the 31st Dec and looking at the leg from HAN-SIN (SQ175) there are only 4 free seats to choose and none seated together (my wife and I are travelling together).

Any suggestions on getting around this? Will calling and pushing that I am a VA Plat open up any better seats? Chance of an op-up likely?

Ring them, expert flyer shows lots of blocked seats (about 160) , no-one seems to know why they block so many. Usually calling can access these. For upgrades on SQ, best chance is to go to your local newsagent buy a lottery ticket and hope that you win Division 2 or 3 to pay for said upgrade.

You can get through to the SQ call centre :?:

Asking me that (having PPS status) is a bit like asking a WP on QF if they can get through to QF call centre. I never have any problems! If in doubt use skype and try the Singapore number.

I'd be surprised if our OP can get better seats as a VA Plat.

When I was a *G (admittedly a BD*G), I couldn't get a better seat via online or calling SQ, unless I wanted to pay up for one of the select seats (can't remember what SQ calls these).

However, when I was at the airport, particularly at SIN, I was able to change into an exit row for free.

Now VA elites may get better treatment than Star Alliance elites because of the tight coupling of the bilateral, but that would surprise me. Calling SQ is definitely "giving it a go" much better than the website alone, and should theoretically improve chances of success.

Calling VA I would imagine would be a futile effort, unless you want to make a complaint about your status.

I am sure they can get seats together, probably not exit rows though. Over on FT, it seems a commonly reported problem that most seats on any given flight are blocked (ie. not allocated, but unable to allocate online) for whatever reason (in this case in excess of 160 seats on the flight) , and anecdotal evidence suggests that call centre can release some of those blocked seats. And this is irrespective of status.

Some airlines block once they allocate.

do nothing and I think you will automatically be seated together in some of those blocked seats.

I called, and because I had selected 'Window seat' for both of us, they had us in different rows (but both with window seats...!)

She removed those requests and put us back into unallocated but said that many seats will become unblocked at T-48hours. I guess I will just try then.
