SORRY I POSTED THIS IN THE 'ASK VELOCITY' AREA - COULD A MODERATOR PLEASE MOVE IT?

VA Gold here just back from flying Etihad Melbourne to Abu Dhabi and Alitalia onward to Milan (and back). I've got to say, Etihad have their work cut out with Alitalia.

The economy seats seem to be designed by somebody who has no idea about the shape of the human body. The seat backs away from you at just the point that your back curves in. Then the headrest protrudes so much that you have to have your head jutting forward in just the way the physio tells you that you need to avoid when using the computer etc.

The business cabin appeared completely empty on both legs.

The economy cabin was full on the way there and half full on the way back.

The staff were absolutely hopeless. There appeared to be about fourteen or so of them. There were very many, anyway. But they were rarely to be seen unless you nipped to the galley at the back, where you would find them all sitting around in a big circle having a chin wag. The ventilation on their model of 777 is absolutely terrible, particularly at the front of the economy cabin. Not only was the air foul, the food was too (carb galore).

And no recognition for VA status holders (although that's normal I suppose, but how come I'm allowed to use the Lounge in Abu Dhabi airport before my AZ flight but not in Milan?). So I used the Priority Pass Lounge in Milan which has to be one of the worst ever. No windows, every sort of uncomfortable chair possible - lots of those tub chairs that seem designed for people with extra long thighs but short calves. No shower. Awkward toilets. No hot meals, just foul sandwiches.

Anyone else want to share their AZ experience?

Edit: I should add that Etihad is getting better and better. The staff seem much warmer than they used to be, super attentive (although there still could be more water runs) and friendly. The seats, while 10 across on the 777 (squishy) are at least actually quite easy to get comfy in. The uniforms are just fab.

Carbs and Italy would go hand in hand would they not? As for AZ, it has been 10+ years since I have flown them so I can't answer that.

Perhaps the reason for the lack of recognition of VA status is the fact that AZ and VA aren't partners as such.

I flew them once about eight years ago, from Catania to Rome (can't be @rsed looking for the codes). Tired plane but ok. Did the job.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Umm,,, with VA plat and Gold you can status match with Alitalia's Milemiglia program. I am now a Frecca Alata Plus ( Plat status and Skyteam Elite Plus ) so you can get business upgrades from economy x 4. ( 2 in reality from eco or 4 from premium eco _

At around the time you posted this thread, my mother's cousin and her daughter (my second cousin) did the Ethihad from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi than the Alitalia to Venice route, and then back home some weeks later. They were quite happy with the flights.

When they were booking, the travel agent offered them Emirates or Etihad/Alitalia for the voyage, with the latter being $1000 cheaper. So I suppose the question is whether one is willing to put up with some minor discomfort and poorer service for the around $250 or so each that one saves on each of the six hour Alitalia flights.

The other issue is that flying Emirates may result in the ridiculous 20 or 25 minute bus transfer in very hot weather from the terminal to the plane that I posted about here, that resulted in both of us having very swollen shins for the next four days. So I paid the premium price for Emirates and we got major discomfort, but my relatives paid the lesser price and avoided the major discomfort.
Regards,
Renato

Havent flown them for some time so cant comment. I am very curious as to what an "awkward toilet" is??

Sometimes it is best to look at all options.

Those sorts of bus transfers are unacceptable but personally I would look to go via SIN/BKK/HKG and don't care about an extra flight here or there. Not in any hurry to go or come back from holidays.
