So I am interested in using Airbnb for the first time in 2015. Does anyone have any good/bad experiences or stories that I should know before popping my Airbnb cherry?

I'm up to about my 8th place now via AirBNB, my wife has stayed in about 4 more and between my sisters another 6 or so. Largely all good to great. My advice is to look for places with plenty of reviews and actually read those reviews carefully.

The only issues I have had relate to finding properties and arranging times so would suggest you make sure you have contact details email and phone and make sure you know where the property is and arrange meet up times beforehand.

Austin, DC, HK, Krakow, Vienna, Budapest - used it in all those places and had great stays. It truly has revolutionised travel.

Ive done 50+ stays mostly in Europe but also in places like HK, KL, Tokyo, NYC, Montreal /Toronto.

Advice is as above, read reviews, and ask for clear directions and pickup instructions. The only issues i have had related to those sort of things, ie in Prague i had to pickup keys from the other side of town as he (host) had to work that day, or Airbnb map having incorrect location and the place was several blocks away.

I also look for professional rentals as they are often cleaner, uncluttered and more streamlined - ie keysafes for selfserve "checkin /checkout". You can usually tell from feedback and pictures if its a professional rental as opposed to someones home.

Having said that i didnt mind staying at someones home on a semi private island in Croatia or rooftop apartment in Brooklyn given they are just inaccessible through hotels.

I used it for more of my travels previously as it was priced with much greater discount margin in prior years(2011/2012) however on my recent stint away this year i found some decent boutique hotels for a similar price and probably stayed in hotels as much as airbnb.

In reply to the question re. new to Airbnb, my advice is:

1. to read the listing very carefully (don't assume the host thinks like you, everyone is different).

2. If you have questions then ask your potential host before booking - this is also a good way to start the dialogue with them and get a feel for how you can expect to be treated during the stay.

3. Don't expect the stay to be like a hotel, and don't treat your host like a business - mutual respect goes a long way.

4. Read host and listing reviews, and be wary of too many bad reviews (or no reviews :shock: ).

Agree, I think the discounts in some cases have decreased. But not in all cases, still some bargains out there, also it is worth googling the description, some properties are available on multiple sites (e.g. stayz, Tripadvisor, FlipKey) and some have lower or no fees.

Are people allowed to recommend a particular air b&b place they stayed? Like, I mean, mention it here or is that not done? For New York does it work out cheaper? 2 people mother/daughter.

I think mentioning a place is allowed but must say NYC is one place I would normally avoid AirBnB since short term letting is against the law (well mostly). Too risky IMO, there are some apartment rentals allowed but very hard to understand the rules if not a New Yorker (and reputedly many of them don't either).

Have you checked the B&B and Inns section or Other Accommodation on Tripadvisor. San Fermin B&B (really apartments) is consistently =1, East Village apartments or the Chelsea Pines Inn also get consistently good reviews.
