I'm sorry, but this is hardly a rivetting topic for most of you, but in my 2 son's it is essential, "need to know" information!

We were always under the impression that you need to pay to watch movies etc on all flights.....we are travelling from Aust to LAX in a few weeks and looking at the Air NZ website it appears that the inflight entertainment is all free, is that correct?

Yes it is....

To the best of my knowledge the only time you pay for movies onboard is on SOME domestic airlines and some "Low Cost Carriers" in various places...

The entertainment on NZ is pretty good... decent screen size, decent selection of movies, TV shows and GAMES (That might well be a hit with your boys...) It is "AVOD" - Audio Visual On Demand - which means you choose what you want to watch... and when. You can pause/rewind/FF etc

These days too the system is on "Gate to gate" - ie before takeoff... but until you are well "on the way" it does get interrupted by various announcements (most of which are mandatory - they aren't really doing it to irritate you!)

I assume you are flying in Economy? (If not then EVEN BETTER ) By world standards NZ's economy seating is very good on the 747, and "normal" on the 777.....

Do you know which aircraft? Have you selected seats?

Feel free to hit me with any specific questions.......

NZ IFE is certainly free and I have to say it is very good, especially with touch screen capability, makes it very easy to use. I am also a fan of this.

Excellent! My husband has been busy putting movies onto his ipod for the flight - maybe I won't tell him and I can just enjoy all the available movies myself:) I don't think the flight is going to be long enough to watch all the ones I would like.

We are flying on a 747, I tried to select seats yesterday and whilst I could do it between Adelaide and Auckland it wouldn't allow me to do it for Auck - LA. We have other flights later (Europe, Egypt, Dubai) would that be the reason I couldn't do it?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

That seems strange....

Tell you what... take advantage of yet ANOTHER reason I like the airline.... Give them a call and request the seats through their call centre - 13 24 76...

I t is not outsourced like so many these days... no matter where you call from you talk to a Kiwi... in Auckland! I have found the staff there almost uniformly excellent...

Sounds like a hell of a trip!

If you really want, you can preview what you can watch on NZ flights as you get close to flying date. It is updated monthly.

You won't be disappointed. I have to say I enjoyed it immensely in my various flights with them for the last 12 months.

Yep, it is one of the great things about NZ. You can pre-select your seats. A lot of airlines now restricts you from doing this, and they do it with their warm Kiwi tone!

Thanks trooper and edison, I will give them a call in the next few days.

Do you think there are any seats better than others in the economy section?  I noted from the Seat Guru website the ones that aren't quite as good (ie near toilets etc) but from your experiences any other recommendations?

It's only on the LCC's and US based airlines which you have to pay for stuff. On full service airlines (non US based) pretty much everything is complementary (sometimes even booze). Yes in a way you have already paid for it, but still, no further dollars have to part from you during your flight.

Which seats!!! The $$$$$$ question....

I travel solo.. and have status with the NZ program.. so my advice is worthless! :(

When I have flown with 3 others (all unrelated adults ) we went for four aisle seats across from/behind each other if you get my drift... We could communicate a bit... but each had aisle access..... That may not be suitable for a family group...

I certainly wouldn't recommend a "middle four" but that's MY preferences talking... THAT might actually work for you????

Seat guru has the rear (65,66,67 A/C, HK) PAIRS "yellow".. but they were my favorites until I "got status" and could pick exit rows or 36C! (Also yellow on SG )

SO... I would tentatively suggest you try for.. say... 65 A/C and 66 A/C.. Those seats also reportedly have the max legroom of any standard seat. If they are gone.. and I think many folks actually like them.. then ..I dunno!!!! Sorry!

In theory, seats down the back "feel" more aircraft movement. I never noticed that... but I'm ex-Navy and sleep BETTER when there is some movement! Didn't notice any real impact from the lavs either... but you ARE last off!
