Air N.Z. & D.J. alliance, could it work?

Should Air N.Z and D.J. consider an alliance, to cut costs, and take on Q.F./J.Q. in Australia and N.Z.?
Cost savings alone on handling, maintenance, and equipment would be significant, and could lead to D.J. getting on board *Alliance. Neither airline is travelling well, and this could only benefit both in the long term.
There was an article in Fridays Australian Business, Aviation section, suggesting this scenario, which when looked at seems a good option.
What say you ff's :?:

Well QF and NZ tried to form an alliance a few years ago but the gov't regulators knocked them back. They claimed it would create a virtual monopoly on the TT route. So I don't know if the gov't on both side of the tasman are ready to change their minds...

Yes, but a DJ/NZ alliance would be a very different thing to a QF/NZ alliance. Don't forget that the QF/NZ alliance was knocked back before either Pacific Blue or Jet* got established on the TT runs.

Totally different scenario.With the QF/NZ situation they would be up against only DJ and the bit players.NZ/DJ is up against QF/JQ and the bit players-certainly a more competitive scenario.
 
To a degree yes, to a degree no... Right now all airlines are fighting for their existance. Regulators need to see that it is in the best interest for the travelling public to allow alliances to happen. Keep in mind that DJ already has a domestic presence in NZ (the country), and whilst AirNZ doesn't fly domestically within Australia, it does fly to all major capital cities (Canberra \ Darwin and Hobart excluded).

DJ has become more than a bit player on the TT route, it has direct flights between most eastern cities in OZ, to AKL \ WEL \ CHC. Either way the success or failure of such an agreement would be in the hands of gov't regulators on both sides, and it'd only be successful if both sides thought we the consumer would get better value.

Alliance, Maybe. Take over bit, only if DJ took over NZ. We all know how well NZ look after Aussie legacy carriers that they control.
 
Side note, Anything that makes QF start a PER-AKL run would be a +ve thing.

I think it would be a good thing. It's not likely to be ACCC issue on this side of the Tasman but could be across the ditch: the TT flights and NZ domestic are where the two airlines compete directly. That's also where i assume the cost saving and efficiences are to be found.

There's clearly money to be saved at the back end. Also - and someone can correct me if i'm wrong - but i assume DJ has a much lower cost base than ANZ which could lead to divvying up routes based on margins??

Of course, the potential for bringing DJ into Star Alliance is particularly promising. As a Gold DJ FF, that's my dream scenario.

I rest my case on the subject drron, how can DJ compete with an airline that has the ability to save million$ on staff uniforms for a starter?????
