Yes, OK (not a scam when they say they won't be taking your money :) ). All they've done is to pause any autorenewals via PayPal while they migrate across to Stripe. Good riddance to PayPal.
So you might think, but a friend of mine (yes really) got caught this way - a payment platform she was on ostensibly sent an email saying they were ceasing to deal with a supplier (just like the PayPal message) and saying new details to follow. Another email duly sent, again ostensibly from the supplier but turned out to be a spoofed address, enclosing a link to the “new payment platform” which was something she’d never heard of (just like me with stripe or fly wire even though turns out both of those are genuine), and from which her credit card details were stolen and used for multiple attempted fraudulent payments. These scammers are getting quite sophisticated, and it can be hard to detect a spoofed address on iPhone or iPad.

True and there is a link in the email and we are all told to ignore links for payment in emails. Maybe @admin could do a dedicated thread and generic payment portal.

I agree 100%. @admin, could you please do something like this to minimise the risks associated with the decision to change payment platforms.

Hi everyone, as mentioned in the thread we have made a change today:

  • The majority of AFF members are on the Stripe payment platform and are not impacted.
  • Below you can read the communication that was sent to the small group of members who are still on an active PayPal renewal plan.
  • Sam (@support) has been doing an amazing job of manually keeping PayPal memberships renewals aligned to our Forum. By taking the next step of moving to one payment platform we can help all members to easily change membership levels.
The below mail is only relevant for members that use PayPal.

Hi,

You will receive an email from PayPal stating that your membership renewal has been paused.

How does this impact you?
Rest assured, this won't impact your current membership. It only means that your membership won't renew automatically on 01/01/2024 unless you update your payment method prior.

Why are we making this change?
We're committed to making it easier for you to make changes to your memberships via upgrades, downgrades and renewals. As a result, we're pausing renewals on PayPal accounts as we migrate across to Stripe as our preferred payment platform.

What do you have to do?
When your membership renewal expires on 0X/0X/2024, please click the below link to renew your membership. https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/account/upgrades

As always, reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions - we're here to help.

@admin - my PayPal subscription ends next June and by that time its unlikely that I'll remember to click the link that the e-mail gave me today to renew membership. I'll put it in my diary, but any chance of setting up a Stripe auto take-up before then? Or a reminder e-mail closer to renewal date?

I was unaware of the Stripe option, else I would have converted ages ago, as I ONLY use PayPal for AFF!!

I tried to log into my account - entered e-mail, got link, but the link merely sent me to the AFF home page.

Good question @RooFlyer. Rest assured, we will remind you closer to the date. Worst case, you will notice that you have dropped back to a basic membership the day after your renewal was due. All you have to do then is upgrade to your preferred membership level. The link provided will allow you to do just that when the time is there (not sooner).

I do like your proactive approach of changing to Stripe sooner: we will look into the option of providing a simple process to change over to Stripe before your renewal date. We will get back to you on that one.

Maybe they need to look at their own IT systems first. I updated my email a few weeks ago, but I just found that the email went to my old email address.

Thanks very much @admin and @support -appreciate your time to do this.

Interesting. I got this email(s) yesterday and thought it had to do with the multiple enquiries I sent through for my PayPal auto renewal not showing up on the forums (still showing ads etc)

But seems everyone on PayPal got it. And I'm still showing ads. 😂
