I joined Airports back in 2001 and have used it to gain points and spend on car hire and accommodation in the past.

In 2008 I went to Europe and the US and flew with Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, US Airways and United Airlines:

Melbourne to Singapore to London, Amsterdam to Ljubljana, Ljubljana to New York, New York to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Sydney to Melbourne.

I only accummulated 205 points, which to me doesn't seem reasonable, considering how much money was spent on flights etc. Oh well.

I can use 200 points to upgrade to premium economy, problem is, my cousin who is flying with me isn't a member of ANZ and wouldn't be able to get the upgrade.

Guess we're both stuck in cattle class then :D

Yeah, well, if it were MY cousin, they would be sitting alone in Y for the trip, and I'd be in premium. I'm sure they would understand, and if not, tough.

I'm not an Airpoints member, but I've frequently read here that it's a great program if you fly on expensive tickets, and somewhat less-than-ordinary if you only fly discounted Y.

Where are you going that you only need 200 points to upgrade?

I can't do that to my cousin...that's cruel

Anywho, SHOULD I opt to upgrade, it'll be the AKL to LAX leg of the trip.

Can I upgrade with my points at check in and hope there's a seat available for my cousin or doesn't it work that way?

You need to go the Air NZ web site and read about the freq flyer program

It's unlikely that they will upgrade your cousin out of the goodness of their hearts. You'd have to pay, one way or the other.

All this is contingent, of course, on your upgrade clearing in the first place. If the cabin is full of paying passengers you're going to be lobbed in Y anyway. If there are silver, gold or gold elite airpoints members requesting the same upgrade, they will get upgraded before general members. Standby upgrades (the one you are seeking), being the cheapest points-wise, seem the least likely to be confirmed. Confirmed upgrades will also take up spare capacity before standby upgrades are doled oout.

Still, I recommend you roll the dice and see how you go. You could get lucky, and if it's only one leg of the trip I'm sure your cousin won't be too upset.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

When I was still status-free on NZ (Jade) I had quite good success with standby upgrades.. especially when flyin "mid week" as you are...

Upgrading Y>Y+ is IMO the very best use of that number of A$.... and I'd be amazed if your cousin did NOT feel happy for you! You earned the points after all....

I'd get the upgrade request in pronto though....
