Well,it's that usual sinking feeling at this time of year when I log on to my account and see that my status credits have been wiped out again for another year. This time, too, it would be a knock down from WP to SG.

In the vague hope that I may have been offered a complimentary year of WP I logged on to my account to check my status and got a very confused message.

My status stayed at WP, my renewal date is still showing as 31 Oct 2013 and yet my status credits had been cleared. It's neither one thing nor the other. The status and date indicate that the changes haven't been applied and yet the status credit removal indicates that they have.

Current Status: Platinum

This is normal, the account will hold previous status for a few days into the new year to allow last minute credits of flights and also a final review of status, then it clicks over.

I think it is to do with if time zones. Yes, in Australia we are 1st November, but it is still the 31st Oct in several other countries, you would still want your status reflected. It will drop in a day or 2. Sorry.

Qantas only hold it for a few days, while AA have a 2 month period to manage the possible late posting of points/miles/sectors that may affect status (calendar earning year, but end February for status benefits). But AA does not generally comp status based on previous years and is strict in enforcing the cut-offs. QF is a little more "forgiving" and comps status for the next year, probably based on prior history. Each system has its pros and cons. Foe example, I am still waiting for a flight to credit to AA almost 6 weeks from flight date. Had to wait 15 days before submitting for credit on-line, then can take 30 days for them to "investigate" so they need the Jan/Feb period for such credits before possibly demoting people who have not achieved. QF seems to have this process working a little better.
