Planning to spend a few days with my partner in Tokyo mid Jan 2013 and would appreciate any recommendations re accomodation.

Cheers

I stayed at Best Western Astina in Shinjuku (and more particularly, in Kabukicho ) a couple of years ago, and it was perfectly acceptable. It just happens to be bang-smack in the middle of Tokyo's Red Light district (no, that's not why I chose it :p), but apart from the African spruikers (who can be avoided), this was no problem, indeed, was quite interesting.

My (single) room was small, but had all the mod cons, the included breakfast was adequate without being brilliant.

Waiting response from op - though Hilton Shinjuku is one of my favourites.

+1 Shinjuku Hilton! Complimentary shuttle bus to Shinjuku station every 20 mins is hard to beat.

If you are anyway interested in SPG the Sheraton Miyako is usually quite reasonable.Shuttle to Meguro station frequently and in mornings a shuttle to Shinagawa station for the Shinkansen and NEX.Just around the corner is the Happo-En gardens which are worth a visit. You can access the subway from Meguro station and in Tokyo that is the most important thing-access to subway + if possible the JR Yamanote line.
If more upmarket the Westin is great-a fantastic breakfast if you can get it included.A fair walk to Ebisu station but most on a moving footway and all undercover.Joel Rubuchon has a restaurant just over the road and the Sapporo beer museum is close.

I agree with drron. I keep going back to Sheraton Miyako. Good price, and shuttle bus to Meguro station very convenient. Some really good places to eat in all directions from Meguro station

I'll add my vote to the Hilton Shinjuku too - gym is great and if you're into chocolate or strawberries, their daily buffet from 2pm(?) has the locals lining up! (Never had the chance to try myself, but we've shot it a couple of times and it looked fantastic.)

Conrad Tokyo is also quite nice - but it's further out, so you'd need to be catching the metro for Shinjuku etc; not difficult - spent a weekend there between photoshoots and managed to get around Tokyo to see a lot of places, using the subway. The gardens right across the road are really lovely as well.

We always stay in the Palace Hotel while in Tokyo, and it has just been reopened this year after a total rebuild. It was great, and has views over the Palace gardens. Stayed in the Peninsula Hotels when we where unable to stay in the Palace Hotel. But do try the Palace Hotel PURE LUXURY!!!.

This could suit rather well (as we'll be arriving around 11pm then leaving at 8...), except booking via that website seems to give you a Japanese engine which makes it hard! Did that happen for you also?

Just change to English Site on the top menu bar.

Found a way around it, manual URL manipulation.

Change lan=JPN to lan=ENG as hitting 'English website' up the top just takes you back to the main page.

The website itself was all in English, but when you then hit the button to check availability the resulting page is all in Nihongo..

When you get to the reservation page, go to the English site on the top menu bar & press search again for your required dates.

It should then appear in English: (translated)

Works for me :D

Well done & good rates ;)

I thought so too, but then realised it's p/p, so 8,500 YEN each. Still not a bad rate but it makes me think the Westin I got in Kyoto for 12,000 total and Sheraton Tokyo Bay for a similar amount I must have snagged a bargain...
