Accommodation gift vouchers for New Zealand

Looking to give my parents a gift this Christmas, to help them plan for a NZ trip or two next year. I'd been thinking of a gift voucher for accommodation while over there.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel chain or option for whom I can buy vouchers in Australia for them to use in New Zealand?

Have they got any plans locked in? or know where they are going? this would be the biggest deciding factor.

If plans are not locked in what about option of loading up a pre-paid visa/travel card, or just given them money or a home made voucher (ie u just make up a piece of paper) with $xx_ or XX nights in a hotel of your choosing when they are ready to book?

Oh the travel card is an excellent idea. Thank you.

They'll be spending most of their time in Wellington, but would travel around both islands too, I expect. (There are no set plans, they'll be visiting a relative who's moved there and then holidaying but no dates are locked in.)
