The New American (Airlines)

I was browsing Facebook.. or Facebook Stalking when I saw a post from AA regarding a rebranding of their company. (BTW, I have no idea the status of their chapt 11 filing, I assume it's still in effect and this is some sort of outcome from that..!)

It takes you to a link which has a nice 4 minute video on The New American, including new plane livery!

It's simplistic on the main body, but the tail makes me think of 'murica straight away with the striped red, blue and white. So I guess the advertising works for me, if they're invoking some 'murican pride - and I don't even have that much of it!

Their new logo looks slick (maybe not better), but I admit I was somewhat partial with the words Scissor Eagle design in the fine print of all their previous promotional material. I'm sure we'll eventually we'll all get used to it right and then complain about the next refresh :D

Admittedly, I've only travelled on AA once JFK-LHR (which was inadvertantly on the same flight as the OW Mega Do), so I can't comment on any changes I'd like to see in their service, so I'll let you guys chime in. They claim to be improving on that front too..

The only thing I don't want to see changed too much is my ability to earn and burn with them, assuming these are all true enhancements and not Qantas style enhancements.. :-|

Re: The New American (Airlines)

The interior of their single aisle jet (A320?) makes the aisle look very small! But it's just a visualisation.

I like the new logo with American down the fuselage, but I'm not sure on the tail...

Also, got no sound with my video?

Re: The New American (Airlines)

So they have finally decided to splash out on a bit of paint on the fuselage rather than leave it as just aluminium to save weight and thus money... I guess it was time to update it a little... The tail isn't too bad...

Re: The New American (Airlines)

Is the logo based on those horrible old style 3d glasses?

I was lead to believe that leaving the planes unpainted actually cost more than painting for some reason, cannot remember where I read that though.

Oh, just read this with regard to painting fuselages.

Besides image, there’s a structural reason American is going to have to start painting its planes. The Boeing 787s American has on order don’t have aluminum skins, they are constructed with composite materials that are essentially super-strong plastics that must be painted. Large portions of the new Airbus planes American has ordered are also fabricated with composite materials.

They have to apply a resin or something from memory. But could be wrong. But I thought overall there was a Fuel saving.

Boeing explains the situation well http://www.boeing.com/commercial/aeromagazine/aero_05/textonly/fo01txt.html

(Seems Boeing thinks unpainted does cost more overall, but that document is pretty old and wouldn't take into doubt higher fuel prices)

Re: The New American (Airlines)

Yes they definitely have improved. It has been reported on FT that their FAs have undergone training re service recently.Certainly on our November,December flights there had been an improvement in service.
Long Haul the food and wine in the F cabin had definitely gone up a notch.Better amenities, now get your bed made-F cabin only.
The pictures of the new J cabin certainly look like an improvement with seating looking like the QF 747 F.
And the belief is the new livery is because of the coming 787s.

On the staff front the pilots now have Ipads which hold all documents, maps etc.It is said by doing away with the bulky hard copy stuff will save AA $2 million a year in fuel costs.FAs are going to get ? a smart phone which will be loaded with data such as pax's status, likes and dislikes as well as recording drink and food orders.Ground staff already in major ports have individual RFID readers to lessen the chance of bags going on mileage runs.

Re: The New American (Airlines)

I like it.

It's clean, simple and modern. I never liked the metallic fuselage previously - it looked so 70s.

Its doesn't save money it costs more, as more needs spending on polishing the skin of the aircraft than washing it if it was painted which outweighs any fuel saving.

i quite like the polished look as well.

Hmm, looks a bit budget and down market to me. Bit too Jetstar.

Prefer the classic look from the golden days of air travel, and bring back hats for hostesses I say.:D

Re: The New American (Airlines)

Tail from the airliners.net looks better - a lot more detail in it

Re: The New American (Airlines)

I like the logo (as per samh004's post #2) but dont really like the tail design (per the link provided post #10). I guess it's meant to be a stylised American flag - I guess if it plays well in the USA that's fine but looks messy for mine.

I recall the polished aluminium saved weight (nad therefore fuel costs) but savings ended up marginal due to the treatments required (fancy polishing essentially) to prevent corrosion etc to the airframe.

Re: The New American (Airlines)

Also you simply can't do a polished frame on the 787 as there just isn't any metal in most places.

Here is an image of a aircraft with the new design

The tail does look better in the photograph, and I'd guess over time it will grow on me. It certainly looks good on the plane, a nice refreshed look :)

Yeah, there was meant to be sound, I assume you've managed to wrangle it somehow?

FAs are going to get ? a smart phone which will be loaded with data such as pax's status, likes and dislikes as well as recording drink and food orders..

As long as they don't check it at every row, I would assume that would slow them down considerably. This must be for elite entitlements like F&B on board?

good pick-up!! :D

there would have been a rush to Costco to get silver metallic spray paint :D

i like the new 'look' AMERICAN' 'AA' always reminded me of 'other' institutions!!

Is it the same as the new CX J seat (ie technically an F branded seat)? To me, it looks a lot like it...
