Hi,

Some time ago, probably 2007/2008, I commuted to Perth each week and was advised to join the AA Platinum Challenge program. From memory, this involved joining the American Airlines FF program and having my miles logged in with AA when I checked in at the Qantas desk for the flight. The result was I achieved AA Platinum status very quickly and that gave me an AA Platinum card and access to the Qantas lounges.

Can anyone tell me if that option is still available?

Many thanks,

Jeff

It is, but Platinum Challenge can only be used once, and you can only use flights on AA metal to count towards your Plat Challenge.

So unless you're in the USA, it's pretty useless.

Actually...

Can be used more than once - just not to requalify.

Does not need to be on AA metal, just AA marketed.

If based in Australia it is harder to do the challenge than it used to since it requires flights on flights with AA flight numbers ( does not have to be operated by AA, so , for instance SYD-HNL using AA7359 will count although it is a flight operated by QF ). A few years ago, any qualifying flights would suffice

To clarify this further - a challenge can't be used in consecutive year, ie to requalify for PLT after losing PLT gained from that challenge.

However, if you maintain PLT by other means after using a challenge to qualify originally, can you subsequently use another challenge once you do lose PLT to requalify, given the lapse of more than one year since the original challenge?

Also note there is now a $ fee to commence the Platinum (and Gold) Challenge.

When I took the challenge several years ago, I qualified for Platinum status with one flight - QF29 MEL-LHR which I had also upgraded using QFF points to First Class. So achieved quickly and in style!
