A pal of mine is flying YVR-LAX on an AA metal, AA flight number paid Y flight he booked through Alaskan Air, and within 24 hours is then carrying on LAX-HKG-PER on CX J using Asia Miles (two separate bookings). Both him and his wife will be OW Ruby at the time of the flights, which allows 1 complimentary checked bag when travelling in AA economy. They'e also travelling with their 2 children, and have a lot of luggage since they're moving home after 2 years overseas!
So the questions are thus: firstly, can all the baggage be checked through all the way from YVR to PER since the LAX stop is < 24 hours and they're all OW carriers; and secondly, will he be liable for baggage charges with the AA flight even though the CX allowance for their J flights is much more? If it can all be checked through to PER, and they get charged by AA, would AA only charge for the one sector or something more extensive?
I know that normally when flying into the US you need to collect bags and clear immigration. BUT, YVR has US pre-clearance which means they'll clear customs in the airport and arrive into LAX essentially as a domestic passenger.
Thanks for any advice and answers!
