AA 500 mile upgrades

Will soon be AA Platinum, and looking at upgrading myself and a fellow traveller using 2 x 500mile upgrades (one per person) on SFO-LAX.

The catch is - we're in separate bookings.
Can I still request an upgrade for both of us as "travelling companion"?

Also, on a different flight, if I am ticketed in First class, can I request an upgrade for someone else?
