Where's a good place for AFF types? Meeting on a plane itself might not be the best way. Bars & lounges seem to be the way to go and that's exactly what 30 odd AFFers did ... by train.

By train? What???

That's exactly what we did!

The plan was a leisurely train ride from Sydney to Canberra via Wollongong. Luckily for us, one of us owns a train carriage!

When the trip was announced ages ago, I said that I was in subject to my roster. I couldn't go on a train trip to Canberra if I was driving a train around Sydney, could I?

I was also pleased when it was announced that the train was going the indirect way via Wollongong. That's typical of AFF, isn't it? The direct way via Campbelltown & Picton is pretty easy to catch a train down with thrice-daily service on the Canberra Xplorer.

The alternative way via Thirroul, Wollongong & Robertson & then joining the main south at Moss Vale hasn't had a regularly timetabled service for about 20 years. While it's primarily a freight line, it has had passenger services in the form of diversions due to trackwork & other service disruptions, you really need to go on a tour train to ride on the Wollongong - Robertson - Moss Vale section.

If you follow the blue line from Central to Wollongong then follow the thin green line to Moss Vale then to Goulburn, you'll see the way that was planned.

With a mid morning Saturday departure from Sydney's Central station & a stop at Wolli Creek for people coming from the airport as an alternative, some people decided to come to Sydney the afternoon/evening before. Others flew from their respective airports on the Saturday, enjoying their breakfasts in the lounges - so they tell me!

As a Sydneysider myself, I could have left home on Saturday morning. I decided, however, to stay close to Central overnight Friday & have a sleep in on Saturday morning. I could also be a meeter & greeter on Saturday, welcoming our interstaters.

I spent Friday afternoon/evening getting some hours up on my new camera, checking out some bottleshops & hanging out.

Friday was a great day weather-wise but Saturday ... not so much. When I woke up, there was a lot of wind around & a little overcast.

With a short walk from the hotel (where I'll get VFF points) to Central, I'd only met two of the incoming pax before so there was a lot of new faces & names for me to learn. I thought I'd help the process with my bright orange shirt.

I found out from a staff member that the blue luggage cart goes faster than the red one.

The platform indicator was telling me that the train would arrive alongside platform 3. But at the timetabled time, the train arrived on platform 1. This caused some confusion with anorher tour group as their hertiage train was due out close to ours. Howevwr, the AFF crew are experienced travelers & took it in their stride, as you'd expect.

The other tour train was filled with what some people call gunzels, railfans or foamers, amongst others. While some of the AFF crew are into trains (some more than others), we were able to talk about a wide range of topics, interact with a large variety of people with a wide range of age & life experiences.

A new AFF experience was ready to depart...

Departure from Central was treated with cheers & the first of many conversations, jokes, one liners & drinks was about to commence.

The rear carriage (BAM 1748) was soon dubbed in typical AFF fashion to be Y. It had a small place for food & drink to be served from if you weren't personally served at seat by the wonderful Charlie. There was also couches & stools near the servery area as well as sleeping compartments if you wanted privacy. I spent the first half of the trip (up to just before Robertson) in Y.

The next carriage (BAM 1741) was soon dubbed as J. With a bar & more couches than Y, I didn't see much of some people until I entered J just before Robertson.

The rest of the train had flat wagons (for a generator & storage), 2 blue cars (that were described as being the QF CL) & then 3 locos, being led by 4403. Incidentlly, the 44 class was one of the first class of locos I fell in love with.

The trip started from Central around 1048. There was a lot of time to admire the passing scenery & talk to friends new & old. Often there would be laughter with some sort of airline reference attached. After going through Sydney Yard & heading over to the Illawarra lines, we stopped (not unexpectedly to me) outside Eveleigh. I was able to get a shot of a stabled Waratah - due to the location & the open windows, it was a better shot than I would have been able to get at work! I heard a joking voice saying "That's it, we're going back to Central!" so I replied "Do we get Original Routing Credits for that?"

Our first stop was Wolli Creek which was an alternative connecting point for people coming from the airport. A pleasant run down the Illawarra with a quick drop-off at Sutherland - gee that guy missed a lot! LOL. Soon enough we were past my area of driver's route knowledge (Waterfall) and we were treated through a run through the Royal National Park. Minutes later we could see the Pacific Ocean but a lot closer to the ground than many of us were used to.

With a group of people who are connected together via the internet & an internet forum such as AFF, it was not a surprise to see people on their phones & tablets. There was a lot of conversations, showing of pictures & people sharing trip experiences. Over the next several hours, many people got to know each other very well which was a great thing about the trip. I had phone service for a lot of the time when I needed it, taking photos & updating AFF. At one stage, we were complaining phone coverage & I remarked that I had phone service on Vodafone where other people on other networks didn't. I've heard a lot of Vodafail jokes before & during the time of being a Vodafone customer but I must confess that I hadn't heard this one before "You mean you had Vodafone coverage outside a Vodafone store? Wow!"

Due to being effectively a private charter, many of the usual restrictions would not apply onboard. But due to being a heritage train, we had to keep out of the way of other trains. Our first major stop was Thirroul, a major centre in the northern suburbs of Wollongong. We arrived on the citybound platform & detrained for lunch. Our train was shunted back into the yard to keep the mainline clear. I ended up going to the local BBQ chicken shop but other people found the local pub. '

After lunch, I was expecting the train to arrive on the same platform as it arrived on. A good thing about the Illawarra & South Coast lines is that in many areas (Hurstville - Sutherland and Waterfall to south of Wollongong), the lines are bi-directional so a train could go on either track in either direction under signals. The train arrived on the usual southbound platform & we boarded the train. After Wollongong, the train turned right near Unanderra to start the single line sections towards Robertson & Moss Vale. The original plan was for a photostop at Summit Tank however we were put onto the line without the platform as a freight train passed by in the opposite direction. No one had a key for the locked gate for the lookout so it was decided that our next stop would be Robertson instead.


By now, it was afternoon time & it was foggy & cold and some rain as we arrived at Robertson. Another freight train passed in the opposite direction - due to the single track, trains can only cross in limited locations with a main line & a loop. A group photo was taken at Robertson eventually - do you know how hard it is to shepherd frequent flyers outside an airport? LOL.


Re-boarding the train, we made a quick stop at Moss Vale for a crew change. Now on the main southern line & back in double track territory, the train crew were able to open up the throttles on the train. Soon enough we passed Goulburn station (lucky I didn't arrange for a couple of friends to stop by & say hello!) but we soon stopped south of the station for a loco change. After the loco change, it was back into single line territory for the branch line to Canberra.


By this stage, my phone was dead as we arrived at Tarago for dinner. Matt had phoned ahead to warn the local pub to expect us but I don't think they expected us in that many numbers. Later, another group of travelers from Canberra had arrived. They were in the middle of a Xmas party & our train would be attached to theirs for the run to Canberra. Some of us waited longer than others for dinner - I think they went to Canberra or Goulburn to find one meal - with the benefit of hindsight, there was no need to rush! It was a good chance to have more drinks & a chat. For some of us who didn't come prepared for cold weather in Tarago, it was also a good chance to warm up! It was also a chance for some of us to recharge our phones, me included.


The platforms on the Canberra line in the current day are designed around a 3 car Xplorer train. There was shunting to do to ensure that the two trains were joined in order to use the one train path. This meant that both groups had to be ready to go - can't have one group ready & one group not. The other group joined first & were enjoying food (didn't they eat at the pub?) while we were on the cold platform. Because the combined train was too long for the platform, we needed to shunt the train forward to bring our carriages onto the platform so we could board the train.


When we were getting ready to board, we were deciding in which order to board. Using a thread theme from AFF, I announced that people who fly VA can go first because QF can't get priority boarding to work. Some people called ahead to their hotels while other people's hotels were calling them to see where they were. With a departure from Tarago at 2255, people could have been expecting to be closer to Canberra. I didn't have phone service either side of Tarago & my battery was flat halfway between Goulburn & Tarago. Returning to the phone serviced world near Bungendore, I was able to call my hotel & assure them I was coming. There was a new ETA into Canberra of 0030.

A new problem emerged. Because there was a flatwagon between our carriages & the blue carriages, we could not easily get off the train at Canberra due to the length of the train & the length of the platform. Compared to yesteryear, Canberra station is not set up for loco hauled trains and doing double stops like at Tarago wasn't possible. A suggestion was made to use an extra stop at Queanbeyan to leave our carriages & relocate to the front carriages. This way, all of the passengers from both groups could leave the train at the platform. I had a minor moment where I thought my bag was lost forever but someone had simply moved it in order to sleep in the sleeping compartment.


A shortish stop at Queanbeyan was made & all of us walked towards the front of the train to change carriages. Canberra arrival ended up being 0027 Sunday morning. Several calls to taxi companies were made before a series of taxis arrived & people went to their respective hotels for some much needed sleep (in most cases!). It was a long day but a very enjoyable one, one that I look forward to repeating. Thank you to Matt, Charlie, our train crew & organisers as well as the whole AFF crew that attended.


Most of us attended either lounge in CBR on Sunday as we headed back to our respective homes, possibly a little worse for wear but knowing that we are all part of an awesome community.

It was cool to meet up with a few people in the Vlounge this morning. I think I was a little more awake than when I checked out.


Me: Checking out of 201.
Reception: Is that including the painting?
Me: Painting? What painting? Oh, I'm on the 5th floor, sorry! I'm in 507.
R: Oh, Mr *insert name here*
Me: That's not me! *looks at envelope containing room cards*. I'm in 501. I'm not awake yet.

Me: No.
 
Very nice trip report!

The photos look fuzzy which must mean I need new glasses! :(
 
I only just read this!
What a fantastic and detailed report. You captured every moment very well.
I hope to see you on board this year! Someone has to be sober enough to take the photos after all! :p
