I've searched high and low for this info....

I've just requested an upgrade. But I don't have any 500 mile credits. AAdvantage wouldn't do this on the phone but it worked online.

Does this mean

1) If the request is successful I can buy/pay at the airport prior to departure

or

2) The upgrade wont clear until I actually buy the credits...

THANKS!! :)

If the uprade request is in, then should the upgrade clear at least 2 hours before you are going to check in, you can happily then buy them online at USD30

if closer to departure than that, you need to buy at the airport and pay the higher rate

I wish AA would buy mine back at US$30 each :D . I don't get any chance to use them since all my AA domestic flights have been in paid A class.

I just see them as additional Points. I have 44 of the little suckers waiting to be converted :)

When searching for an answer to the above I saw a mention that you can convert them to points, if that helps...

Speaking of checking in, I'm trying to upgrade LAX-MIA on a ADL-SYD-LAX-MIA ticket, therefore I'll be checking in about 20 hours before most other pax. Does that put me at an advantage or a disadvantage?

Yes indeed, but I would like to get US$30 each for my stash rather than 500 miles per 4 upgrade e-certs.

I thought it was 500 miles for each 500 mile upgrade.

ie. 4 e-certs would be 2000 miles.

I thought I saw 4 x 500 mile = 10,000 pts......

Hasn't been that for a looong time. Earned upgrades can be converted at 4 UCs give 2000 miles

Ah yes, I think that is right. I knew it was a lot worse than it once was.

Depends on whether your upgrade is cleared. If it has cleared then you can buy before you leave SYD and have them ready for when u get to LAX. If it hasnt cleared before you leave LAX, then you need to decide on whether to gamble buying before flying or to wait till arrival and only buy if it clears

Now I'm more worried about missing out on the upgrade altogether....

Even if I pre-purchase the credits, if AA don't start allocating upgrades until 24 hours before the flight..... will I miss completely if I have already checked in?

I dont think it will affect it, since iirc, OLCI doesnt cause an issue, in fact it can be a benefit. What status do u have?

Also do remember, if it doesnt clear before u get there, do remember to add yourself to the upgrade list at the airport since at t-3 hours its an all new game with the airport upgrade list; the earlier you check in , the higher on the list on the airport standby list that you will be

Cool, thx.

Gold, and where should I ask to be added to the list? ADL or LAX?

LAX

QF staff at ADL cant do anything - and would no doubt have absolutely no idea what you're talking about!

As suspected........

Could you elaborate on the OLCI factor? I think with AA you can do it at anytime. I've certainly already picked my seats.

Trying OLCI now....

"For AA codeshare flights operated by our partner carriers, please check-in online or at the airport with the operating carrier"

I can't use Qantas OLCI can I?

no, you cannot use QF OLCI when the itinerary include connecting international flights. But you can use AA's OLCI for the LAX departure, even before arriving at SYD so long its less than 24 hours before scheduled departure.
