Hi,

I'm just wondering if I could book a ticket for someone else and pay using my credit card on Qantas.com?

Thank you.

Aaron

Yes, no problem booking for a third party on QF. Unlike SQ which is a real hassle.
I've just booked a flight for a family member on the SQ website and am now required to front up at the Singapore airlines office in person with photo ID and sign an indemnity form.
What a load of cr@p.

Makes you want to go elsewhere doesn't it?

If I had any choice I certainly would have gone elsewhere. The booking was to get my nearly 80 year old Mum ADL-MAN-ADL and she wanted the most simple itinerary possible. With a single stop in SIN, SQ offered, by far the simplest option for her (and avoided the dreaded LHR). I don't mind the 70 kilometre round trip to sign a bit of paper to make things simple for me dear ole Mum but I'm struggling to understand why, when the CC transaction will be finalised months before the first flight, do I have to indemnify SQ for the full cost of the ticket.

Here's the wording:

In consideration of Singapore Airlines Limited accepting my 3rd party booking for-
ColinP's Mum
flight no...
Date....
Itinerary.....
I, ColinP.... Passport no......
Address..........
agree to indemnify Singapore Airlines Limited the price of the ticket by payment in cash forthwith upon notification by Singapore Airlines Limited of the non-acceptance of my credit card ......
used for the payment of my 3rd party booking (ticket number.......)
Signed...
Date...

Please sign the document in the presence of our staff when you collect the ticket (
I already have the E-ticket). You will need to bring your credit card and a photo identity as well. This information is confidential-- Your privacy-blah blah.

Yep, I do it regularly.

On the page for the names of those travelling, there is a dropdown box to enter your name as the "Travel Arranger". I fill this in, as I assume it would allow me to act on their behalf if required. Someone else may know if this does anything.

Couldn't you have avoided the 70Km drive just by going and buying it from a travel agency? Possibly a TA fee, but a lot less effort I woulda thought

Doesn't seem that unusual with a lot of Asian airlines.

Even BA sometimes wants to see the credit card used for purchasing when you check in.

Like Dave says, buying through a travel agent moves the risk from the airline to the travel agent, so the airline should no longer request any fancy paperwork etc

I was asked for the credit card used to pay for the booking in BKK at check in for a BKK-SYD flight on BA a couple of days ago.

Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if I did not have the credit card I used to pay for the booking with me. I don't carry every credit card on me at all times....

When I said I'd have gone elsewhere, I meant to another airline (EK if they flew out of ADL?) but SQ is the only way from ADL to MAN with only one stop.
The 70K drive doesn't worry me. I'll combine it with some other business in the next few months and avoid TA fees or CC surcharges. I'm just curious to know why SQ feel the need to put such onerous conditions on a credit card transaction. I'm sure they've been caught out in the past in some way but for the life of me I can't imagine how. In my case, they'll have their money from Amex. Amex will have billed me and I'll have paid Amex -- all before the ticket holder even steps on a plane.

In the case as described they would; consider however, if they removed that requirement for bookings > month away, an unscrupulous thief might make the booking for 2 months in advance and avoid the requirement to present the card; then change the booking for this week and then travel before the cardholder even realises that there has been a charge

The problem can be easily circumvented imo by using a TA so, to me, seems to be a minor issue
