I haven't got this problem this year, but I may have next year. My 'new' year starts on October 1, and I will achieve WP again by the end of November with a huge amount of international flying. So, I might actually have to make a decision in 12 months. What will it be?
  • complimentary Gold membership for a family member or friend or
  • three complimentary Qantas Valet Parking or Chauffeured Transfer invitations++ or
  • a bonus of 50,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points
What have others done in this situation?

The complimentary gold membership would be for a member of my family who can never quite get past bronze and who always flys with me on leisure trips. So, the only benefit would be the points and status credits.

Valet Parking - Chauffered transfer doesn't interest me.

Do I need 50,000 points? Of course!

So it is between gold and the points!

Dare I dream???

This was my choice. MsPG was QF Silver but with the QF PG from my 3,250 SC last year, and the extra points earned and the ability to use JASA flights to maintain status, thanks AFF for teaching me now to do this, :D it is much easier for her to maintain Gold, especially if I send her 100k points per year.

This year I plan to maintain both QF and VA WP, so MsPG needs to retain QF and VA Gold status herself and the one time lift to Gold with both QF and VA and the greater points earn has made that much easier.

Your mileage may vary.

Additional suggestion is to status match yourself to VA WP, give your partner QF PG and then status match them to VA Gold?

If you are married and your wife hasnt reached gold, there is only ONE answer to your question!!!!!!!!!!

To Juddles : I am not married, and I thought my selection of an orchid as my picture might have indicated that I am a woman, so no wife! :D

Mini Ms who will still be a full time student for a couple of years yet and can't self fund any travel would be my selection for gold.

GoWatson - I am mightily confused and will have to look into these JASA flights - have seen this written elsewhere but I don't have a clue what you are talking about. As mini Ms won't be able to maintain gold for a few years, and if I choose PG as the reward, I'll have to use OneWorld only to maintain platinum and the extra sc's for PG for mini Ms. Can't divide between Velocity to enable this.

Thanks for your thoughts! :)))

I'll probably have this decision at the end of my current qual year. I'd probably get to 2,400SCs, but won't make it to the mythical WP1.

I'd probably go the points, though I think 50,000pts is a bit lame lame for what is essentially 2 x Platinum. One J > F upgrade SYD-LAX and they're gone.

  • With some perhaps careful selection you could allocate a Gold membership to someone who was willing to do an occasional airport pickup/dropoff, thus attaining 2 out of a possible 3 rewards.

I will be facing a similar choice soon. Ultimately it comes down to which of the three benefits is most valuable for you.

Personally the 3 chauffeured transfers I would value at $200. Because that is what a taxi would cost for similar. The valet parking I would value at a similar amount.

For me the partner gold is not much benefit, as I don't have a partner/close friend who flies enough with Qantas separately from me to benefit from it. Partner gold has slightly less benefits than Qantas club. Qantas Club membership costs $470. If you can take advantage of some of the additional benefits that gold has over qantas club then the value would increase that might make it worthwhile.

50000 points... Hard to place a value on these as their value depends on how you spend them. If you could purchase that many points via topup (there is a limit of 20000 points per year) from Qantas it would cost about $1400. If you can make good use of award tickets and any seat awards you can get a lot of value from those points. So for me the points win by a big margin.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

...... :)))

Dear LAH,

my apologies. I am married and my wife is well aware of the benefits (ex Qantas staff) so I had no option! So what I really meant was about my situation. So in your case I really think the points is the best option.

And may I say that is a truly beautiful orchid! :)

I am planning to take the points this year rather than PG as mrssimongr always travels with me or would be travelling in J if travelling alone.

If I was in your position though and you had the status match to Velocity platinum and had flexibility to manage your travel I would seriously be considering whether Virgin Australia might be an option to maintain status in both programs to increase your chances across airlines.

Exactly my situation. Will take the points over the other 2. Wife will travel with me when she does travel, and don't have any close friends/family that would use the Gold Status, and limo transfers? As a public transport user all around the world a limousine transfer just seems like a waste. Each to their own however.

On this point, where can one use the limousine transfers (a nice change to public transport)? All around the world? Can anyone tell me? :)

Food for thought - thank you!

Thank you Juddles - and no need for an apology. I am taking your suggestion on points into consideration ..... if I can use them with all my other points, it could well be the option!

JASA is a QF Business / J Any Seat Award that can be obtained for just the Classic Seat Award points. JASAs earn both points and SCs as if they were bought with cash while CSAs (Cassic Seat Awards) do not earn points or SCs.

JASAs are such a major part of AFF life that there is a dedicated sticky thread about this and how to use them to earn SCs and points. JASAs are about the only item that QF shines over VA. By using the points you would earn as a WP and applying them to JASAs you can reduce the cost of retaining WP by around 25 - 35%.

I took the points because my partner almost always is with me when she flies.

Thanks for the prompt gowatson. I have been meaning to see what this is for a while. Read through the thread and I think I understand. Wish I'd latched on to this sooner.

So if this is still going on next year, I might choose the PG for mini ms (daughter) and then use jasa's for both of us. Much appreciated! More food for thought!
