It s a donation, quite simply. Not sure if it accepts foreign credit cards though. Savvy travelers have all types.

OK, well I am having a crack at it. Staus of my credit card is "activation requested." It says allow 48-72 hrs for card to become active before it can earn. I'll let you know the outcome.

I have reached for a CC with a mini limit just in case

ah, I see what you mean. I can confirm that I have SUBMITTED the card details and they may not yet be ASSOCIATED.

But the card was not rejected outright as I thought it might be if details ineligible

meanwhile while you have started me on this I am off to see if I can buy some SPG points to add them to my existing SPG total to help build up the AA pile

Not surprising. A charity getting thousands (and there would have been thousands and thousands) of $1.01 / $1.05 transactions would be wondering why, and assuming they pay a fee to AA for the points, would have been out of pocket on the transactions.

Also, according to the FT thread: AAdvantage Shopping - College Bound Institute - FlyerTalk Forums , it might not have worked anyway if Paypal was the only payment method.

But how would the transaction track back to AA then? The credit card used won't go through the merchant account - just the Paypal account, and although the description will mention the charity, I'm not sure that AA can track that.

It was PayPal acting as the acquirer for the merchant, no different to any other aquirer, rather than you paying through your PayPal account as such.

But, the transaction will be charged by Paypal. (I've used this type of checkout before - and Paypal appears on the bank statement).
Eg: PAYPAL , *<company name> , <transaction number> <amount>

I still don't see how AA can track that via their usual methods.
