Give VA a ring and inform them of your situation. The exact same situation happened to me 2 weeks ago whilst in New York. VA emailed me a letter stating my situation on Velocity Letterhead signed. Used this at JFK & AUH successfully.

Yer, unfortunately we only just found out.. not the ideal scenario.. The other option I have is using points and pay the whole way there and back, reduces the cost to about $1600.. That would still get me status credits and points yeah?
