Ask for an extra pillow and blanket if available. One for your head and one for your feet or under your knees, whatever extra comfort you need.

If it helps you should know that with Qantas the cheapest possible international fares (Sale fares as opposed to Red E-Deals) are not able to be upgraded using points. Sounds like this may be a factor for you.

I agree that it can be all too easy to slip up on this one, and I certainly learned the hard way on my last trip to the US (if only I'd read more detail on this site before booking). Sometimes the price difference isn't worth it though to worry about whether you've earned the points or status :)
