I had one given a few months back in the Syd lounge and was called out before it had started boarding and they said a paying customer was going to get the op up seat they had given me, I ended up back in my original 3A though.

Yes they will recognize it, it is based on your status when you stay, not when you book. As for the Diamond, it's worth it, I have been upgraded every night except a new years eve night and that is to be expected. About 6 stays since August.

Virgin have started using gates 2 and 3 all the time lately too, can't remember the last flight I got from gate 4 or 5, looks like they have moved Jetstar out to the farther gates in preparation that Virgin will use the gates near what seems like being the new Lounge.
