Just adding to the chorus, was able to upgrade the BNE-MEL segment of a TSV-BNE-MEL itinery, but having said that business class is available the whole way. Had to book the whole thing in flexi of course, but still, comp upgrade is a comp upgrade.

Agreed, doubly for flexi. If availability on business was one of the main problems (assuming outright losing 50% on an expensive ticket doesn't come into it - and I'm sure it does!) that is easily remedied if you left flexi on, as I am reasonably certain that upgrades come out of the reward...
