Thanks for your suggestion, I called, requested a refund. This was followed by a "ACTION REQUIRED: Your Refund Request" email from QF that I responded to. My refund (including credit card payment fee) arrived into my account yesterday.

Why not just scrap SC altogether. Seems pointless if you're just going to pimp-out status for purchase

Look up "Qantas Price Promise" You can book within the "safety" of the Qantas website Then grab the cheaper quote for the same trip from Skyscanner using an Australian-operated travel agent and screenshot it (including a date/time on screen on the same calendar day as you've purchased the Qantas...

For me, that's a "cancel, get refund, rebook at cheaper price" trigger -- even with a $600 cancel/refund penalty. I value the $1600 difference more than the DSC. Then on the rebook, search and price a cheaper fare using skyscanner and claim for Qantas Price Promise.

Hear hear! American Airlines can handle seat selections on a multi-leg trip under a single flight number (multiple different aircraft) why can't QF?

The double SC promotions always seem to appear when there are NO seasonal sales discounts running. After the current crop of New Year and Summer sales expire there's a lull before the start of the next school holidays season when most fares are regular price ... then BAM DSC promotion for fares...

Isn't that QF11 though? And yes I agree, with the LAX immigration queue >90 minute delay (600 sweaty people in a 9-layer deep human snake with only 6 out of 48 booths open) the staff are always at desperation to get everyone continuing through to JFK to hurry along.
