    Travel plans 2024

Revised plan - not long to go now. May 21 I depart MEL for CAN on CZ J! to see some relations before heading up to Luoyang and Xi'an for some "domestic" leisure travel for me. Returning via HKG on June 9 to hopefully catch up with the AFF Asian pub crawl people, returning HKG-SIN-AKL (SQ J) and...

Cheap flights coming? - China’s back

My cousin used to be a stewardess for MF until she become a mother at the age of 40. I have never flown on it though so I can't comment on their quality or lack thereof.

HKG lounge crawl 9 June 2024 (the annual Asian lounge crawl)

Maybe we can meet up for a coffee or a snack the night before. Or even dinner Saturday night. I could always cancel my SQ J redemption to fly in Y on Qantas, but whY would I want to do that?

HKG lounge crawl 9 June 2024 (the annual Asian lounge crawl)

I'm booked on SQ J departing HKG at 1540 on Sunday. :I Any options for a meetup? Maybe it will have to be outside the lounge?

Currently booked to fly HKG-SIN-AKL afternoon that Sunday, but on SQ. Could meet up at an independent lounge or a hotel lounge before that though. Would love to catch up on our misadventures.

HSBC Star Alliance credit card in Australia

Just got approved for this card. Question is, should I opt for Air Canada gold status or Singapore Airlines gold? The former gets you 50k points with Air Canada (I do travel to North America every couple of years), the latter gets you access at Virgin Australia lounges, which I might use 10-15...

HSBC Star Alliance credit card in Australia

OK a couple of questions before I apply: (1) If I get approved this month and make the minimum qualify spend, do I get Gold Status with Canadian until end of 24 or 25? If the latter is that contingent on me stumping up the fee next year? (2) Do I need to apply to a particular website to get the...

Is travel to Israel/ME realistically possible?

My current tentative travel plans for 2024 due for long service leave: May 23 MEL-HKG CX PE Jun 10 KUL-MEL J PR (return fare in J 1.4k AUD) Sep 25 MEL-MNL J PR (discarding final leg to KUL) Sep 25 MNL-AUH-JFK in J (3.8k AUD approx), returning 8-9Nov, with a stopover on the return leg. I plan...

Relative value of redemptions - JQ J vs QF J

Travelling in Y long haul is humdrum at best and torture at worst. It's acceptable if it's all you can afford with a cash fare, especially to Asia where jet lag is negligible. If they sold upgradable meals, then they would be less of a grind.

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

4k ex cgk to Europe is a very good deal these days. My planned 2025 trip is to Eastern Europe.... hoping to get a return J saver on SQ for 55k each way dps-ist... IST is technically in Europe!

Relative value of redemptions - JQ J vs QF J

Or I could go AKL-nan-lax for slightly fewer points, there are things I might do with a couple of days in NZ or Fiji, I don't know how does Fiji airways compare to Qantas these days though.

Relative value of redemptions - JQ J vs QF J

I still have the option between two redemptions for my trip next year. On the one hand I can travel directly to the west coast of the USA on QF J, but I still need to get from MEL-BNE on my own ticket. It would cost 108k points. Or I could take JQ J from MEL-SYD-HNL for a mere 61k points. I...

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

Oh, I was just being my usual cynical self. 5k change fee is miniscule compared to losing the option altogether.

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

The seat has reappeared. It took a total of three hours.

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

NB. Now the seat is no longer showing as available even in the flexi-calendar. Luckily there are still a few almost-as-acceptable redemptions on the couple of days either side of it. If you consider premium economy or routing via Auckland/Fiji as "almost-as-acceptable".

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

On the flexi-calendar the award is still shown as being available (the red kangaroo sign appears on that date) but when I actually click on the date, it is no longer there. This particular award has been open for weeks so I will be highly angry if it gets truly snatched up in that 1 minute...

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

It is an international, QF metal award with a short AA connecting flight onward which doesn't add any points cost to the total. There would not be a ref number as I hadn't booked it/not in my shopping basket.

J award disappeared after doing dummy booking

It's been 1 hour and it hasn't shown up, but I will give it a few hours/a day.
