SYD Named 5th Most Luxurious Airport in the world

Except for a few isolated spots in SYD or LHR, they are far from luxury. E.g. the check-in area & security in SYD T1 is mediocre at best in visual please or functionality. LHR T3 transit security is awful from 'being a pleasant' experience viewpoint (visual please, feel of being in a good place). To me 'luxury' includes also the feel factor of the place, item or situation.

Sure, airports are pushing these retail luxury brands to the terminals. I do like the new outlook of the SYD T1 central area but that lasts for 1 minute only when walking through. Then it's the dullness of a rather bland terminal, again (unless you have access to a decent lounge).

Technically there's 10 lounges at T1
QF F, QF J, EK, SQ (Could even be considered 2 with F section), NZ, Amex, The House, Skyteam, Plaza Premium departures, Plaza Premium arrivals.

I actually don't think this is a bad assesment of at least T1 (based on their criteria)? It has a massive luxury goods precinct which is a critical part of what this survey looked at with beautifully designed flagship stores for some mega brands. Below is the metrics used and the top 10. The luxury brand weighting pushes Sydney way up this list. The champagne and caviar score seems ridiculous as it's either a yes/no to their existence, but from my memory Sydney no longer has a bar like this?

Ah, luxury shopping. A great way to make a place bland, soul-less and absolutely devoid of any character. Wherever you put a whole heap of luxury shops (with a couple of exceptions such as the Champs d Elysees) they seem to suck the life out of wherever they are. At MEL Intl terminal (T2), the walk between the Duty Free Outlet and the main pier used to a lively area with cafes and a tarmac view. Now it is dead passageway full of empty luxury brand stores.
Shows how our economy is doing compared to Asia (see SIN luxury shops). Of course the rich can still continue to afford (although they don’t think of affordability) but the aspiring middle class would probably go for a better luxury shopping experience elsewhere outside Aus

surprised to see SIN below SYD. Now I know any hint of credibility is gone for me

Quite rediculous scores with repect to use of airports etc. Who actually buys overpriced junk from the supposed "luxury" stores in airports when it's cheaper outside?

I did read a reference to the fact that SIN scored very poorly on the rating of having "luxury" 4-5 * hotels in the airport vicinity (there is only 1). Basically results skew to airports with lots of hotels close by, hence LHR, CDG and even SYD rate highly.

I wouldn't call 5/30 ranking highly but given the increase in (mostly) 4 star hotels nearby it does seem low for Sydney now if Changi is a 3 with only the CP?

Reminds me of this, and of course it sold out online

Ironically the airport hotels were a direct beneficiary of the SYD curfew, although I suppose the filth Rich’s private jets would not be affected by the curfew

Also never seen shopping at SIN as good value. Seen same electronic goods on sale onUK high streets cheaper never mind Amazon.. these days of SIN being of good shopping value at airport and in the city are long gone I think.

~20yrs ago stuff like digital cameras & USB sticks were heaps cheaper in SIN airport than in cheap joints/stands in Sydney or duty-free. ~10yrs ago that was no longer true …

Duty free does exist anymore apart from drugs such as alcohol and tobacco.

Cheaper in discount stores outside airport. You ”may” save 10% GST but usually the store markup is more.

Not sure the "cheapness" of particular airports is a factor in determining if an airport is luxurious.

If saving a few bucks here and there on goods is your aim, not really consistent with "luxury" where price is often not so much of a factor.

Dunno about the durries, but "duty free" booze (local or in OS airports) isn't worth bothering anymore either, you spend $2k+ on an airfare & then go through the hassle of saving all of $20 on a really nice scottle of botch ...
Yes! Agree! Just drink the Chateau D’Yquem and Henassay Paradis bottles on the fight as planned by @VPS ! :)

Yes, aside from sprit alcohol, savings for inbound duty free are basically just the GST.

... and it is not difficult for most to legally avoid GST for non personal stuff without travelling.

Maybe away from most pax I agree...but they did say luxurious....so on that basis....however I do still struggle with Sydney on that list. Tbf most "luxurious" hotels are also outside the remit of many people.

Also if they include Rex domestic..is that not also just what the Virgin lounge is?
At least in Rex I get to decide HOW I want to eat my toasties and serve my drinks (like an adult). I find that I get better value for the money in the REX lounge (seriously I can get a big bowl of spaghetti or macaroni salad that VA serves all at woolies for $4 and stuff myself sick however I'd be broke doing the same for pre-packaged 7-11 toasties).

It’s not cheaper outside though.
The vast majority of the luxury boutiques in these airports are brands that don’t do discounts.

Getting them duty free is a discount over buying the same stock at a boutique in the CBD.
Could always claim TRS etc but why bother if the item you want is available at the Airport?
