This is all well and good, but does anyone really believe that there will be more upside than downsides in this latest revision of QFF?

Based on past performance, I'm inclined to think not. Leopards and spots (and it's still the same leopards, even though they have jumped (or are jumping) ship.

In any case, we shall soon see. I hope I'm not right here....

I don't disagree but QF cannot afford another PR nightmare. So it might look good on the surface with the devil being either in the detail or in 12 months time.

That’s why I’m reasonably optimistic about any change. You'd hope the new CEO will want to maintain a fairly clean media and PR front for as long as she can.

@JohnK
When I want to get an award for January 24 I start looking in January 23 so I can see when the awards are being released so I can pounce when the day I want comes up. Though being retired we will have a few days either side that wouldn't worry us.
Late January is when lots of folk are returning to Australia from OS.
So I looked up January 2025. A fair bit of availability via Velocity of BKK-SIN-DPS-SYD (or BNE on SQ and VA for 43000 points or QR for 78000.
But looking at QF. in January only awards on 27/1 and BKK-KUL-SIN on MH the SYD on BA. 99000 points in Y but 89000 points in Premium economy.
First CR on QF metal on 3/2 for 45000 points.

Totally understand. January is busy. That doesn't explain February-March which should be low season.

My general thought is it will be beneficial to most QFF users, but may bring downsides to some "power users" such as myself and other posters here.

Personally I've very flexible with when I travel, so I can make use of last minute award space drops to get business seats when I can. Also, I use the Platinum award seat release perk from time to time.

Both of these could be nerfed (either intentionally or collateral damage) by, e.g. the addition of a 2x-cost Reward Seat tier, even though I understand it would benefit the average QFF user.

The phrase running through my head is "unintended consequences"

I agree with the general view that QF intends positive changes for majority of customers. They can't afford to "Do a Delta" and have that as a very recent lesson on top if tge last few years of brand disaster.

Of course I also think the other shoe will have to fall down the track - as they usually do.

However in making changes that will potentially be a "win" forbthe punters there's room for smaller groups of punters - be it reward release requesters, or longer term planners, upgraders or whoever. More likely than not there will be an unforseen gotchya that will come to light*

We'll just have to wait and see.

* yeah, I'm that cynical

Given the competitive pressures in this part of the world (vs in North America) wonder if award waitlisting was/is being considered. That is (or used to be and maybe will again now demand is dropping ) a great feature of Krisflyer.

It's fairly clear it will simultaneously have upside and downside.

Upside: more award availability.

Downside: costs more.

If you are points rich and have an inflexible schedule, the upside outweighs the downside. If you are points poor and have a flexible schedule, the downside outweighs the upside as Qantas push more seats into this new tier.

However, market dynamics will be the ultimate determinant of where it goes. At the end of the day, airlines need to fill seats in premium cabins. If When we get another black swan event in the airline industry that craters demand, we will see cash fares come down and classic award availability open up because people won't even be willing to pay the newer higher tier award price. Indeed, while we haven't seen it with Qantas yet, classic award availability between Australia and North America has never been better due to United having heaps of capacity and not enough people willing to pay. They regularly have 9 award seats in J available on multiple routes across most of the year, as long as you are willing to wait until the last couple of weeks to book.

Maybe Turkish's entry into Australia will open up a similar competitive dynamic onto the European routes, especially when it begins to offer 1 stop connectivity. Though Qantas have a lot less capacity to Europe, so the risk of having empty seats is going to be lower — their vulnerability to competition is mostly on their Asian and North American routes where they fly a lot of planes.

I thought something looked different when I was doing a multi-city booking last night. Had the same trip summary screen with the Points Plus Pay option at the bottom.

Yeah, looks like you select "Rewards" on the search form, and in the results you'll see "Classic" for CR and presumably another label for the new rewards option.
I wouldn't be surprised if Qantas begins to drop the language of classic rewards.

There will just be a toggle between Cash and Rewards. If the old classic rewards are available, it'll show that price. If they are not but the new rewards are available, it'll show the higher price.

My guess is Qantas will do that to minimise confusion (two options: cash or rewards) and to help people get used to the idea of variable award pricing (ie you look at the rewards tab and determine if you're willing to pay the points price that is on offer).

But this “Classic” label in the search results is new, isn’t it? Which suggests they are sticking with it?
