One of the easiest ways to gather points is to buy wine through Qantas Wine. Was that on the list for a ways to get a few more points? Think of it part of as purchasing points with wine thrown in for good measure.

Correct, it's not (and the introduction to the article says as much). But there are lots of people out there who are not as into the points game as us who do have small points balances and might be wondering what they can use their points for. Hopefully this article will be helpful to them

Actually, for QF domestic how it works is if there is U inventory for a flight, you can request and get confirmed an upgrade immediately (i.e. not wait listing). When U is 0 you are on a waitlist and it'll be up to Qantas revenue management to determine whether to upgrade passengers on the waitlist. The practical implication of this being that if you are booking a Qantas domestic flight in economy using cash, look for those flights with positive U space to ensure your upgrade will clear on request. This can be done by simply seeing if which flights on the day you are travelling show classic business award availability.

Come to think of it there's actually a lot more things you can use 10,000 points for on Qantas than what is listed on the article. For instance, you can use points to pay for preferred seating on a flight. I think (but I'm not certain here) that points can be used to book a neighbour free seat if you don't hold status that provides you with a shadow (i.e. World Platinum or Platinum 1). I'm not sure what the value per point of that is, but something that could be worthwhile. Points can also buy you flexibility on Qantas. In particular, 5,000 points will let you make a change to a classic flight award (per pax) whereas 6,000 will let you cancel out of a classic flight award (per pax). You can also use 10,000 points on a bid upgrade with Qantas combining with some amount of cash. No doubt there are other ancillaries that can be bought using QFF points that I'm unaware of.

I was thinking more of like a deal or no deal type game where you are offered various bundles of rights and get to choose...

For all those people knocking the toasters, there is some merit to this. My mother is the type of person who always uses points on various rewards programs for things like toasters, her argument is with a flight I only get to use that once, whereas with a toaster I get to use that all the time. And the toasters aren't bad either. Heck, they got the luxury 4 slice toaster yours truly has at their home and highly recommends:


With that being said, the article does raise some very interesting points. There are a number of travel things you can book using just 10,000 points, and if you hold any level of status with Qantas the value for flights only goes up. For instance, I booked MEL > SYD on December 23th as a classic economy award for 8,000 points + ~$40 in taxes n' fees by calling QFF and requesting the release of a seat. Keep in mind during that time there were no classic award availability and the cost of a cash ticket on the time I wanted to depart wasn't cheap (i.e. $150 on a JQ starter). So easily I got $100 value spending 8000 points (arguably more since this was a QF flight which included a checked bag which anyone flying obviously needs).

I'd save the 10,000 QFF points and wait until I had 17,500 QFF points as that is a one way to BKK when it's marked down.

The 3 of us are going to Thailand one way on Christmas Day for 52,500 QFF points + $350. We're returning on SQ + VA one way for ~$2300 as there's no award availability. Still streets ahead of the $4500-$5000 we would have paid for return airfare on SQ.
