Gifts for cabin crew

Hi guys, I’ve got a JAL flight Mel to NRT coming up. Flying in J and was planning on 5 packets of Tim Tams. It’s first time gifting for me. Is this too little for a 10hr flight ? Or too much ? I am not expecting anything in return for me. It’s my first time flying with JAL and I have heard of their great service so want to reciprocate with giving them some chocs for the long flight.
Also, when’s best time to give this ? I’ve seen others gift it when they come around with welcome drinks. Thanks in advance. 😊
I would start with one packet and see what the reaction is. Some Japanese might be embarrassed if they don't have something to give back to you.

I agree. (and 5 is a little extreme regardless of the flight company.)

On another note, I got pulled aside at LHR for a bag search because the French fruit jellies I was carrying were cause for concern. Explosive test complete I was allowed through of course. Perhaps I should have thought of a less exciting gift for the SIN crew on my final leg!

Thanks @QF WP I used your suggestion in post #198, of under the BP at boarding on all 4 flights last week.
The chocolates were much appreciated but moreso the hand written card.
Followed this up with compliments form to Qantas.
I think we can all relate to long days and their challenges!

Hi all - random question maybe!

I flew Melbourne to Dubai last night, and noticed a really nice thing a family did for the crew.

When they boarded they gave the cabin crew in our section a gift - I've no idea what it was, but it had a big impact on the crew who really appreciated it. I gathered that one of the family was cabin crew with Virgin Aus, so would probably have had an idea of suitable gifts!

So, it got me thinking - what would a nice gift be on a long haul? It seems a really nice gesture and I'd quite like to do the same on my next long haul!

Cheers!
Haigh’s chocolates for sure! To be honest it isn’t something J would have ever thought about though.

I agree with this idea. Cabin crew often have a tough time, especially on long haul flights. And showing appreciation always makes them feel better.

I often take a few bags of uniquely Oz sweets, usually Minties, and hand them out near the end of the flight. I'm probably responsible for numerous trips to the dentist to restore fillings!

I can't believe this thread. Gifts for cabin crew? I've never done it, never considered it and never would. I smile and say thank you and (usually) get great service. Mostly flying in F internationally and J domestically.

In my past working life, when a patient took the time to pen a note and /or gave chocolates, it was always much appreciated.
I understand that we are all "doing our job" and get paid for it, but it is such a nice gesture - same also as giving some Christmas beers to your "garbo".
It's what my mother taught me to do.

Lol. yes! we do that! Slab of beer for the waste collection crew on the closest day to christmas!

i come from a hospitality background, and a financial tip or even a comment like "this is the best service ive ever received", or " thank you very much for looking after us" makes the biggest difference

I slipped a 3 pack of ferrero rochers to the greeting crew member ( not the FSD) on QF 3 ex AKL about a fortnight ago. Received a polite thank you at the time which was nice, nothing extra. Not complaining, just posting for information.

No. Stop it. Who tips the pilot?

Complements, congratulations, but no sweets etc. just no.

Getting towards silly americanisms of not paying staff who must rely on tips. Just like Musk and Bezos who spend multiple millions a year fighting unions rather than paying fare wages and conditions.

Creepy creepy creepy, 100000x worse is those that do it at the start of the flight. The real and only reason that is done is to try to ensure their wine glass is always topped up.

One of my kids wrote a nice card for the crew once and the end of the flight, as she said "they gave me so much apple juice".
