My car (which has not moved since mid March) is due for registration renewal. NSW has free registration if you spend a certain amount on tolls each year. Normally I would have reached the threshold easily, but due to COVID-19, I am in the tens of dollars short of the threshold.

I used to do the odd Mileage Run, but have never done a mattress run. Do I do a Toll Run? I think I should take the long route to the supermarket and Bunnings. I really should take it for a drive to charge the battery and fill it up with fuel anyway.

How close are you?

At least petrol is cheap but if the trip is deemed unnecessary by the constabulary then the cost will be in excess of the rego.

$50 in tolls = free NSW rego, hell yeah!

Rego in Tassie is much more than $300, more like $600
Same here in Victoria... well north of $600 if I recall correctly. Had no idea NSW has this scheme. On the surface seems to make sense and I would certainly take up the offer here in Vic.

I drive 50km each way to/from the office and currently do it avoiding Toll Road (EastLink) as I worked out it was costing me about $800-900 / year, and I prefer to save that for travel.

But if I could "write off" a chunk of that as "free registration" then I would use the Toll road for sure. Dan... The Man... are you listening? :D

Fact check. Toll spend is based on FY. So if your rego is due prior to 30 June 2020 then your toll spend for 2018-19 FY is what counts. To obtain free rego next FY you need to accumulate spend of $1352 during the current FY (spend of $811 gives you a 50% discount).

Last FY I was going to be about $20 short of the free rego target so did a short toll run. Unfortunately It was pretty easy to do as plenty of toll roads locally.

Didn’t realise Qld so dear. $737 for a corolla

As above - NSW separates the insurance component.

So it's $350-600+ for the rego (weight dependent) then another $400+ for the greenslip (third party insurance).

A Corolla in a safe area with a less risky driver is probably about the same.
A Heavy car with a male 20yo with a few demerits is a lot more

Only one vehicle registered in a name is eligible. At least in NSW
But you can have multiple vehicles on one toll account. This enables you to pool the toll spend and qualify one vehicle when individual spend would not otherwise get over the spend hurdle.

Yes but what if all 5 vehicles individually qualify for the free rego but for the 1 free rego per person rule, that person does not get it for the other 4.

Of course you could transfer ownership but then you gotta pay 3% stamp duty
