Qantas/China Airlines code share

FYI for those looking to fly to china with QF

I would rather fly to HKG on QF then KA/CX into China or TPE, than a non QF/OW status recognising carrier direct.

Really QF should be signing codeshares from their Asian hubs like HKG, rather than giving all the business to other carriers.

Anyway I'm sure the bean counters know 'best'.

Qantas signs codeshare deal with China Airlines

China Air are *not* a chinese carrier, they are Taiwanese. It wasn't so long ago there were no direct flights between Taiwan and China, even now quite a few of their flights into mainland China are actually codeshares on chinese airlines. Also, CI did *not* have the best of reputations, safety-wise.

Back in the day, QF had a code share agreement with Eva - as far better service-level match than CI were at the time.

BD

Well out of HKG,
CX won't come to the party preferring you to fly on CX metal.
QF already has codeshares with MU and CZ, and I'm sure codeshares with JHK would be part of the plan if ever approved.

The BR codeshare was Y only, really pissed me off. Wonder what CI will be.

Can we use points to book these flights as Classic awards?

I think this is good news. We fly to Taiwan and this means I can go direct get QF points and access a lounge. I wonder if they will create an associated lounge for those with qc membership to use in tpe.

The problem is you will only get lounge access one way (departing australia) and then again only if the QF lounge is open, just checked the BNE to TPE timings and it departs at 11pm, so the BNE lounge will still be open, however QF changes its lounge opening timings seasonally around QF and OW flights(that are contracted to QF) not other codeshares generally.

Can a mod fix the thread title? It's China Airlines, not China Air.

Haven't flown the service but I have been looking at QF into TPE for next year. The price difference between Direct Ex SYD and via HKG with QF/CX was only $14.

I'd probably go via HKG tbh.

We booked the BNE-HKG-TPE with CI for HKG-TPE. It was significantly cheaper to go through HK and it means on the way back I can visit the new HK lounge, dine with Neil Perry etc . Plus you can have one flight during the day which I prefer. The direct BNE-TPE flights leave at midnight in both directions.

Am I correct in assuming that the baggage allowance that applies to the longest flight in the itinerary applies? My allowance on QF with QC is considerably more than CI's allowance for economy. I reckon I should be right when checking in at BNE but I don't want to have any issues in TPE on the way home.

The standard allowance of QF will apply coming back. The QC allowance generally will not apply as it is not QF metal as your first sector.

I flew return J: SYD-BNE-TPE-SYD in Jan for a work trip to Taiwan.

I think was about $3500 in total, staff are attentive and friendly. Wouldn't say it was near QF J standard for the Aus - HK/Sing routes, cabins were a bit dated and felt a bit like the CX intra Asia J. No lie flat bed, just fully recline able seat, fairly limited entertainment options.

Still was happy to take it over MH J.

So its better than both MH A333 and 772 J?

While I can't comment on the soft product having never stepped foot on CI, the actual hard product on their newer A330s (B18356 - B18361) is actually exactly the same as what you'd find on the VA A330s and as such, is actually not too shabby. From what I gather, the SYD and BNE flights are usually operated by one of the newer fleet and so will have the newer product as well.

My comment is not directly on topic here but as it relates to the issue of code share, and the relationship between the carriers I thought I would raise it here.

As discussed above we took QF97 to HK and then a CI flight to TPE as this was the cheapest option for our Chinese New Year trip.

After some personal intervention from counter staff we got the bags tagged through to TPE. I think the computer system doesn't recognise their relationship even though Qantas sells CI flights on its website for our itinerary. This was because CI and QF "don't code share at all" according to qantas staff. Of course, as we know from this thread they do code share on BNE-TPE route but not on HKG-TPE. I didn't argue the point as I was happy to get the luggage tagged through, and it happened we received it in TPE at the baggage carousel.

We had to head to the CI desk in HKG and print the next leg boarding passes. I understand this is because they are not part of the same alliance, notwithstanding codeshare arrangements on some routes.

As we may need to take this itinerary again could we expect the arrangements to improve or is this how things are likely to be for the duration of their arrangement?

No lounge access for Gold flying economy. "Qantas only buy seat" according to the lounge ladies
