I really prefer printed BP's for various reasons. This makes it annoyingly difficult.

And I wonder, honestly, what about a lot of folks without smart phones or other devices?

This is like tickets to the (AFL) footy - a lot of people without devices are stuck in limbo with all digital tickets.

Is it a deal breaker? probably not, though my little box with decades of momento passes will be a bit sad to not have more (I don't want to be that guy to bug lounge or gate agents just for a BP).

I wonder how this will set up for international tourists whose English is not the best, or ideal, I can forsee lots of problems about not being able to check in, in their case.
Not Qantas checked in because they thought they could do it at the QF domestic terminal at the airport.
For me, if I fly out of ADL I can print a BP from home here, but coming back, hope my phone will have enough space, already now its memory is giving warnings.
Will QF international check in counters at Aust airports still exist, for passport swiping I mean, ...?

SYD airport int arrivals have them, but some of the wires are broken or too short, and many are in high demand.
Or they might have been removed now due to covid.
((Not to mention chance of viruses, computer or human)) when they were there.
It was near the Optus and other mobile stores near the glass wall to atrium downstairs on ground floor.
 
I don't understand what problem they are trying to solve by disabling kiosk check-in? I mean it's not as if they are removing the kiosks so why remove the functionality from them... it wasn't broken before. Surely it's cheaper to have a kiosk processing the check-in rather than have someone line up to have a human do it.

Too bad if you need assistance with a problem as the lines will be full of people checking in who could have otherwise used the kiosk.
 
I usually check in on my phone but scan my FF card at the gate so I get a print out to show on board. So much easier.
They aren’t posting out cards though. Unless you use an old one.

And when flights are delayed. Once flying back from MEL I had only a Digital BP, storms came in flight was delayed by 3 hours, by the time we boarded the digital BP had expired, QF pretty much had to trust we had a ticket.

I always insist on paper BP for international, as domestic points from QF always show up, international points form partner sometimes need chasing.

Domestic I'm not fussed if they remove the ability to check in at the airport, as long as I can still print BP and Luggage tags, as the Q tags are unreliable and i don't have a printer at home.

TBF about 70-80% of domestic passengers check-in on their own device or through a desktop as it is.

As for the costs, it depends on airports and if using the airports infrastructure.
Just for an example MEL T2 (only international) - they charge:
29c per person plus $35.49hr for every manned counter
20c to board per person
68c per bag sent through the auto bag drop.

If using the kiosk, then it's a $0.00 charge for check-in.
68c per bag sent.

No idea how domestic charges work now with leases ended in major ports.

Not having "manned" check in stations might result in some serious disability support people generating lawsuits. Although as long as connecting international airlines require paper boarding passes that might also create some "issues".
Is this an opportunity for the air ports to have a pay for use station to transfer your electronic boarding passes to paper?

Manned counters are not going?
International connections are and still to be done through a person, because QF never upgraded that tech prior to covid anyway (for kiosk check-in).
Phone and desktop is different.

But there will be and the central point support staff (not the ones behind the counters, the ones in the middle of the array of check in kiosks) can also print boarding passes - unless these workstations are going, but there’s been no mention of that.

Plus on top of that you have the manned stations that remain.
 
If you asked me a few months ago I would say that I wouldn't have any issues with this, other than the fact that I like collecting boarding passes and I won't be able to do that anymore.

However, on my last two flights in the past month, I've had multiple issues the mobile boarding pass not showing correctly in the app (as in, I open the app and it lists no trips, so I can't view the boarding pass), which is somewhat disconcerting. I know I can scan my QFF card in the app or my physical QFF card to board and get the printout, but ehh...
