Are you able to select TAS and pay the $20 for a 1 person offset even if you live in a different state? Or is there some check in place where your registered address needs to match?

Yep i've had several occasions in Perth where the priority boarding or priority security lane is longer than the 'normal' lane. As they're both being processed at the same speed (and often priority security is slower), i'll just join the normal line.

If it's a domestic flight on Qantas, absolutely take the direct flight. It's very easy to get the orc. For other situations.... I can't comment

The flight was cancelled ~6h before departure. I was impressed by qantas' website that lets you pick different flight options. They put me on a flight via Sydney first, but I selected the direct flight instead.

It was cancelled a month before the first flight. I finally got a confirmation email from Qantas that "Your refund has been processed". Still haven't received the points or $$. But that's some movement at least.
