Are free upgrades a thing of the past?

Though the seats and catering are unexciting, there are things that the crew can do to improve J experience on intra-Europe flights. I have flown J a handful of flights between VIE and AMS RT and one occasion stands out. It was an early morning departure from VIE and upon entering the plane I...

    China Southern is leaving SkyTeam

Have not used them to US but their planes to Amsterdam and Paris were much better than what they spare for Sydney where they operate mainly old A330. AMS and CDG get 777 and 787 which are much nicer. Even A330s on those routes are newer and configured differently as they have 1st class as well...

    China Southern Seat Selection?

It can be tricky on their website. Booking code may be required there. Also, if you use a middle name it must be entered straight after your christian name without a space. Call an Australian China Southern office and book the seat through them. I have always found them very obliging.

    China southern

Select your seat ahead of the flight and go for the front rows seats. These are what they used to call Premium Economy for a while. They dropped the name as the difference between these seats and the regular Y seats was very small. More legroom, smaller cabin and fewer seats taken. You need to...

    China Southern is leaving SkyTeam

Apart of excellent coverage of destination within China, CZ also has a good coverage of Central Asia destinations. OneWorld lacks airline that serves Central Asia destinations and so the alliance might see this as a value of CZ. CZ J class service on long haul has improved greatly over the last...

Inconsistencies in airport security around the world

The most thorough security was in Urumqi in September. As in all Chinese airports, all luggage gets X-rayed before one is allowed to enter the airport. I was asked (politely) to remove a knife from my suitcase. The guard was kind enough to lift it up for me and to help me with unlocking it so...

    Business Class Europe to Australia

Thanks for your your correction on CA/CI. Also for the warning that the seats are not fully flat. I will probably finish sliding down for the long leg from Soul to Vienna. And, of course, I have booked an aisle seat - convenient for me to get up but the person next to me will have to climb over...

    Business Class Europe to Australia

I flew on CA's A350 in June 2018. The hard product was amazing and the food out of Vienna was the best J or even F food I've ever had. But only out of Vienna, due their famous catering. I was going to book the same trip with CA this month but the flights had been rescheduled and required cca. 18...

Are free upgrades a thing of the past?

When you ask for an upgrade at the check in counter, some airlines will say 'yes' and quote you a price for such upgrade. Often it is just a few hundred dollars thus letting you fly J cheaply. China Southern sometimes have upgrades for cash at check in. You need to be prepared to sit it out in Y...
