Check in agent said they wouldn't check the bags through, but I pushed her a bit and she did it this time. Now to hope that flight isn't delayed and we get through LA. Thanks for the help everyone.

Everything I can find says the policy changed on June 1st. Is it published anywhere that it isn't changing until the 31st of August? Just basing it on my luck I would prefer to take something in writing with me if I can. Thanks again for all your help, I do sincerely appreciate it.

We were trying to avoid having to spend ~1k to rebook to the later flight. I understand this is our mistake, but obviously trying to fix it as inexpensively as possible. The next later flight to ORD is booked, so it would be the 6 hour later one IIRC. Thanks for all the info though, I think...

On the phone AA implied it would be a hefty sum if we missed the flight. I've never missed a flight due to a connection though and assumed if it wasn't your fault they'd be helpful.

Only flexibility is changing the dates, we didn't buy cancellable tickets.
