Are you looking at the pay with points option? As these will always be dearer. Award flights are the cheaper version. 500k points vs 140k points on award flight. You just don't get points for the flight. I may be wrong but that's my experience

It's 1 point per $1. But to get $10 or 870 points you have to have 2000 points (obviously $2000) So a trip to Melbourne at 8000 qantas points will only cost you $20,000.... I much preferred points for over $30. At least then I was getting something. I've been at $1.10 on rewards points since...
