If you are going to the bottom island, Beppu is pretty cool. Good aqaurium, monkey park, safari park and amusment park. Plus its filled with onsens. It was an area with alot of hells which are interesting. Plus the town is only 100,000 people so its a nice change from tokyo/osaka.
