If VA don't grant me a status upgrade how do you guys think I should go about getting up to at least Gold as quickly/cheaply as possible? I've heard the US is one of the better places to do a status run but I'm still pretty new to it all.

You're right about that actually. Still haven't fully locked in the order so destinations can be swapped around! Hostels will definitely be the primary source of accommodation, maybe with a few nights booked at decent hotels here and there :) Yeah that's crazy! It's all about supply/demand...
