    Ask The Pilot

Hi There Pilots, Regarding the Jetstar Osaka flight last week... I would assume it's unlikely to have two engine problems on approach and my initial thought was contaminated fuel, but apparently that's being close to ruled out (according to this article anyway). FR24 shows it flew to AKL on a...

Is there a rule regarding sleeping pills for flight crew? Are they allowed to take them to assist sleep during layovers or is that a big no no? If allowed, is there a "cut off time" (similar to the "bottle-to-throttle" rule) where you can't take them before signing on to fly?

Thanks JB. Those Brit pilots like ours, seem to be exceptionally well trained. I guess many are ex-RAF? Just noticed that the gear doesn't retract either before the end of the clip and even the climb out looks like the wind is buffeting the aircraft. A yucky London winter's day all-round really!

I saw this clip of a BA 787 Go-Around from last week at LHR. I'm not normally one to dramatise things, but this looks quite scary to a lay person. Pilots here, in this aborted landing how close was it to touching down nose gear first? Close as it looks in the video or a case of "move on, nothing...

Interesting reading your flight log, JB. Based on the cities you mentioned that you've operated to, does this mean that you never flew a delivery flight of a 767/747 from Boeing in Seattle or an A380 from Airbus in France back to Oz with a new aircraft? Also, I was doing some reading on the...

    jb747's last operational flight

As others have said, "thank you" for what you have provided to us, JB. Now that you're retiring, plenty of time to collate "Ask The Pilot" - the book - from the content of these threads. No doubt it would sell like hot cakes. Wishing you all the best for your final sectors and life ahead.

Sincere thanks JB and Aviator Insight for those detailed replies. Great reading and great learning for me. Appreciate it.

This was our approach, go-around and subsequent landing into SYD on QF2 last Wednesday during the fowl weather. My first landing on the east-west runway at SYD in an A380 resulted in my first go-around in an A380 - wow! Never felt power quite like that in an aircraft! It was a "late" go-around I...

Hi JB. Hope you're on the mend soon. Just wondering what your opinion is of this LH A380 Go Around? Doesn't "look" that windy but there was a noticeable bank before the GA was initiated. Traffic on the runway? Or problem with the approach do you think? Whatever it is, an awesome sound when...

Regarding the MH incident in BNE recently... Malaysia Airlines flight emergency caused by plastic covers left on gauges - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) I know there's various check lists on the flight deck for various phases of the flight but is there an "official check list"...

Yes, I missed out last time because of that so I've booked the 6.40pm from BKK, so I should get an hour or so in there this time. Thanks for the reminder, Danger!

I'm doing similar next month with MH - found a great deal in Biz direct on the MH website. BKK-KUL-NRT // NRT-KUL-BKK for 26500 THB. ($1100 AUD) Looking forward to checking out the newish Qatar Biz Lounge in BKK - pics online certainly look good - as well as experiencing the new MH lounge in...

Hi JB, Regarding the the MH A330 that diverted to ASP yesterday (seemingly on one engine according to passenger accounts) flying the SYD-KUL sector, Flight Radar 24 shows it turned around over BME and headed back to ASP. It looks to me that DPS is slightly closer to BME than ASP. Given than...

    Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

It depends who has seats available. They'll try and keep them to Jetstar flights if possible - via SIN for example, or re-route people through another city in Australia. I had friends last week booked on JQ37 from SYD-DPS, and it was cancelled. JQ re-routed them SYD-BNE-DPS the next day...

    Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

JQ 37 from SYD-DPS is cancelled (again) today - it's happened a few times in the last week or two. Apparently one of their 787's VH-VKL is out of action right now and it's causing problems all across their 787-network in terms of cancellations. I'm flying SYD-DPS-SIN next week so fingers...

Hi JB, As others have said, thank you for all the time and effort you put in here. It's very much appreciated. Apologies if this has been mentioned before on the thread - obviously hard to go through 854 pages (what a book that would make just thinking about it!) I was browsing the net and...

Wow. Must be a lot of "good" pilots out there, JB! I'm glad you didn't post which airline they worked for, or they might be off my "happy to fly" list. Ignorance is bliss sometimes as a passenger, I guess. As my uncle (who was a L-1011 and then 747 pilot with CX for many years) said to me once...

Thanks for the quick answer, JB. (Instead of asking you I should have done this in the first place, lazy I know)... but I just did a search on airliners.net and found someone else asked the question. The answer they gave is below and it obviously means more to you than a lay-person like me...
