FWIW, I have used Europcar twice in NZ (ZQN both times). In both cases, the proper discounts were applied and upgrades received (I'm no expert in the vehicle classes etc, but the last time I was upgraded from a Corolla to a RAV4).

I've also stayed at the Swissotel Merchant Court (Clarke Quay), and would stay there again. I like its location best, it's close to the metro, and reasonable value for what you get.

I've found status can be useful. I was scheduled to be on the 1730 PER-MEL flight one Friday evening and had already checked in online earlier in the day. I left the city at about 1630 thinking I had plenty of time, only to get caught up in the roadworks and the traffic as the heavens opened...

I can corroborate this, as both SG and WP and with a 100% success rate last year. In fact, I've even been given the rest of a bottle to take home with me twice (although these were probably the last flights of the day).
