Not on one of the QF dash 8 flights I've been on. On an American Eagle flight last year (ORH-JFK) the flight attendent was asked by the flight crew to pick 5 random people seated at the back to move into business for balance issues (E175).

No, but Qantas won't look at it like that. Charter = fully booked aircraft with confirmed $$$$. Normal service = maybe not sold out, only $$. If they are going to get more money out of a charter, then they are going to take it, even at the expensive of a normal service.

They can do the this sort of maintenance elsewhere, it depends who has the contract. They used to send the A380s to Lufthansa Technik in MNL (and sometimes Germany).

You could also go via Tokyo on JAL. JAL's international 787s have 8 across in economy, thus wider seats then every other airline using 787s. (The only 787s JAL has with 9 across are the 4 788 "E21" domestic config aircraft and the 788s JAL has leased to their low cost carrier Zipair)

It's been on the plans for a while. They aren't able to start work on it until they complete some current projects which allow them to move the "eagle's nest" remote terminal.

If it doesn't look like they are going to improve the visa options for AU passports in the next week, I guess I'd better go do this evisa thing.
