This makes me feel out of touch.. I’d earn less than 1% from flying, and the rest from churning. One credit card bonus is so much higher than what you get for taking a flight. And it gets reinforced because I tend to use points instead of paying for flights so earn no points, just SC as PC+

Yes, maybe but the idea is it might be quicker return of points over the phone. If getting the points back quickly to book another award isn't an issue, cancelling online would probably be OK. I don't know from firsthand experience how long it would take to get the points back online.
