If I am in a window seat then I’m not particularly interested in pleasing other people. They can use the eyeshades that have been provided for their comfort and convenience.
Which is why the cabin crew lock the shades and won't generally unlock them.

And that is the response to your above comment about circadian rythmn.... 💁‍♂️

One person's want to see outside doesn't overule 100 people's need to sleep. No matter whether it's day or night outside, if the flight is longer than ~6-8 hours expect the majority of passengers to want to get at least some sleep.

Can always go to the exit and look out the window which is blocked by the galley curtain....

Counter argument is you can always put on an eye mask. Then everyone wins.

By the same logic, do you recline your seat all the way, for the entire flight?

I would recline my seat as much as I want, whenever I want. Seat recline is the prerogative of the seat occupant.

Unless you’re trying to watch your movie in darkness. That said, eye masks may improve some films.

You do not need to plunge the cabin into darkness to watch a film, just as you do not need to plunge an office into darkness to use a computer monitor.

With no consideration whatsoever for its affect on those behind you. So, by the same token why should the crew feel the slightest issue with denying you any control of the window.

The same as I have never once been asked for permission to recline by the person in front of me. That’s just how it works. It’s not being boorish or lacking consideration, it’s just acceptance of the fact that seat owners should (and do) control their own recline. If people don’t like it then private travel is an option.

You're right of course, it is. So, when on your Gulfstream, you're welcome to put the window shades wherever you like.

I would argue you don’t need the window open to watch 14 hours of ocean. Find a picture in the QF magazine and stare at that instead.

Actually in the context of the 787's I'm not sure why this debate is a thing.

TBH, the big advantage of the 787's is you can still see out of a fully shaded window and still see some of scenery if you are sitting by the window (for example on day flights over continental Australia or enroute from SE Asia to Europe), albeit muted and tinged with shades of blue, without the glare of full on sunlight of having the window shades open.

You actually can’t

Some 787 windows, specially earlier builds imo, darken less than others. Some I have been on and the max dark is more a dark green, and sunlight can still shine through to a degree and cast the cabin in a greenish light. Others though, can go really quite dark not 100% but definitely much closer to black. Some you can see through easier than others imo.

To be fair, I can't remember the last one I have been on that has been bad. Perhaps some ac have had a fix. Unsure.

Actually the 787 can be quite on brand for QF - a bit inconsistent 🤣😇

I’m with Mr H for part of this.

Seats come with recline. There are times when you shouldn’t recline… during meals, or at ‘busy’ times like after meals when many are trying to get up and use the WCs. But otherwise, it’s a feature of the seat. And there can be good reasons why recline is essential… like being in the middle seat between two broad-shouldered passengers!

But the difference between recline and windows is that you can pay to avoid the former. I can pay extra, or simply choose my seat wisely, to avoid someone reclining into me.

I cannot however pay to avoid harsh sunlight streaming in!
