2024 QF Inflight safety video

Remember, for actual use, this will be heavily edited down to the 3-4min mark for domestic, and a bit longer for international as is usually the case. They have released long form vids in the past, but actual use the fluff is cut out.

And there's a LOT of fluff.

Frankly, apart from dear Nestor, this is a snore fest and boring. It also doesn't highlight the safety info that well (but it's no worse than many of the previous ones). I mean it's so quick about where the life jacket is and doesn't show in context of the aircraft cabin you're in it could be confusing for some (for example).

For me though it's dull. Nobody really cares about the backstories of "Alex" (who looks way more like a hot actor than an apparent FF - though can be both of course) swimming with his kids, or why the Cabin Crew from LHR loves Morocco etc.

Just on the mix of destinations.. At first I thought Lapland Lachie was a nod to the AY wet lease :p but I thought about it a bit, and perhap it's way too subtle notion of QF's partners' networks. Eg: AY to Lapland, Royal Air Maroc in OW to get there, AA to Cabo? (could be a stretch). I can't think of any other linking thread between them except to have a pretty (and expensive) video from all these places. QF of course flying to FCO, CDG, etc.

Sadly no real innovation or interesting things here. I don't have an issue with the indigenous elder welcome, but I know a lot of people will be angry and call it "woke" or whatever.. well that's their issue. Doesn't bother me either way, and it is beautiful up there.

The domestic edits of this will be interesting, but it will have to lose so much fluff that it will lose any cohesion with the idea of who is telling you things or why... and with that in mind, I personally think having it simpler and to the point, would be better for all rather than these hugs productions of extra "story" that we don't need (like the totally staged "surprise" in Rome).

Anyway, at least it's not "Double Shots Maaaate" or "Hello Captain, Hello Skipper" from the past so more forgettable than totally horrible for me.

I'll always smile at Nestor though. :)

I may be outside of their target audience, then. I tuned out already during the first watch and thought the video is familiarising the customers with travel experiences... 🫢

this youtube version is meant to be longer than those inflight - they would be shorter and more to the point than this. But I do also agree this is way too long even for youtube version
 
I'm flying today so will be interesting to see the cut-down version on board, there is a lot of room for editing.

Weird decision choice to feature locations that QF do not fly to such as Mexico, Morocco and Finland - surely they could have found staff/FF/actors that love places serviced by QF.

I'm sure a few WP/P1s will recognize Nestor.
Flew this morning and the new video wasn’t updated yet. Guess it will take some time to roll it out to the fleet.
 
Another thought, the SQ video is six years old now. And it still feels fresher than today's attempt by Qantas. SQ got the tone right and locations and personalities don't take over the safety message. Not a single part of it is annoying or a chore.
I really do think QF hit the mark just fine on the first video, it would still pass as a good video now if they just updated the logo.

Unfortunately that was the shortest lived of all the safety videos, barely lasting a year.

Noticed no "please don't abuse our staff" at the end which seems pretty common in these things lately, but maybe it's on the cut down version.

I recognised the FFer from Korea - her name is Grace and she is on YouTube, I think she's an English teacher there, she does a lot of language/accent comparison videos.

I think that was covered by the use of the word "respectful" hidden in there "Please help us create a safe, resoectful and positive environment..."

Cabin crew call for ‘elitist and sexist’ Qantas safety video to be binned Paywalled, so a few extracts

The Flight Attendants Association of Australia has slammed the new Qantas safety video, calling it elitist, sexist and failing to acknowledge the important role of cabin crew.

Released on Wednesday, the six-minute video will be progressively rolled out on domestic and international flights in 12 different languages.

FAAA national secretary Teri O’Toole said she was appalled by the video, which appeared to be more about destination marketing than safety.

“Not once does it say ‘follow the directions of your crew member’, which you would’ve thought would be the focus of a safety video, especially after the Japan Airlines’ incident, ” said Ms O’Toole.

“I thought the last one was bad, but this is worse. It was commissioned by (former chief executive) Alan Joyce, and it should’ve been shelved, just like Alan.”

Ouch.

Ms O’Toole also questioned why a female pilot appeared in a swimsuit, suggesting that sort of depiction took women in the workplace “back 20-years”.

“I didn’t see a male pilot in a pair of budgie smugglers. Vanessa Hudson needs to put her foot down, and scrap this video,” she said.

“We’re disappointed and angry the company is wasting money on that. A safety video should be about safety, not a rom-com.”
 
Bad timing due to JAL flight but this video totally misses the mark. All airlines should focus on safety again. Safety demos should not be marketing anymore.

I think the original argument was nobody watched the boring safety videos so making it more interesting attracted more eyeballs.

More and more airlines are doing audio only with FA demos (due lack of screens) which IMO is the way to go.

Which is what I tried to show in my post about the inflation vest. Showing the red cord placed behind the waist strap. Minor thing, but if it's supposed to be a safety video, this should've been picked up!

The video hits all the essential items for safety video and I suspect it passes CASA requirements. However embedding safety instructions within a video which messages something else is problematic IMO.

BTW nothing about turning off Bluetooth before airplane mode. Is that not important anymore?.

And there are ways to do that without making it Love Actually 2. You can do frequent, simple, cost effect changes, without a massive production that still get the message.

JAL has been nothing but applauded, including for the short concise 4 minute demo in two languages which actually calls out certain behaviours. This one is going to be about 5-6 in just one language.
