Vegemite under 100mls for carry on

I have American friends and colleagues living here in Australia who arrived as adults who have developed a strong appreciation for Vegemite.

Apart from the mistake of spreading too thickly, the other reason doesn't work so well stateside is that their white bread is sweet, so much sugar that it conflicts with the savouriness of Vegemite.

Nope sorry fruit cake is just foul, I had the misfortune to be offered it as wedding cake, Xmas cake and Xmas pudding growing up, and it's just nasty. I don't know anyone under 70 who likes it. Why opt for stodgy stale cake, when you can bake something far far tastier and eat fresh.

Can't contribute much to this thread, except ;

1. I have seen small single serves (sachets & bottles) of Vegemite in different lounges in AU during brekkie time. I'm sure that the staff will be more than happy to grab a handful if asked nicely.

2. My only experience (first & last) with Vegemite was when I first arrived in AU to work in a bank, I mistook a jar of vegemite for a jar of Nutella ... I usually eat Nutella by spoonful ... You are welcome to guess the next bit as I don't think I need to explain anymore .. 🤣🤣🤣

This later became a prank in our friends group - when anyone comes from overseas, there is a jar of Vegemite (misinformed as Australian version of Nutella) for them to try and let us know what they think :p🤣🤣

Oh wow, and I there I was thinking that born and bred Aussies were cruel when it came to inflicting Vegemite on others! 🤣🤣

63 years old and I love love love fruit cake, made to my mum's family recipe if possible. I also love Christmas pudding, made to Mr Seat 0A's family recipe. And Seat Grandaughter, aged 3, will devour a slice of fruit cake with her afternoon glass of milk if allowed!

You are absolutely correct about this! When we lived in the States and I had dreadful morning sickness whilst pregnant with Seat Son, I absolutely craved white toast with Vegemite. I thought about it almost 24 hrs a day. Mr Seat 0A, bless him, scoured the local supermarkets to no avail, although the "French style frozen bake at home baguette" was tolerable for plain bread and Vegemite, just hard to toast. He won the husband of the year award for driving to Canada (from Dayton Ohio) to buy authentic French loaves in bulk which he duly sliced and froze for me.

In typical pregnant woman style, once my sickness passed (at 24 weeks :eek:), I could not stand the thought of white toast and Vegemite!
 
Really !!!......what's happened with this thread ? From a genuine question re conveniently packaged vegemite for carry on, to sickly Nutella by the spoonful, to knocking Grandma's fruit cake and Christmas puds, to the cons of sweet US white bread. Personally, I like deep fried chocolate covered brussel sprouts washed down with a sardine milkshake.......but who cares ?

You couldn't ever describe even an average fruit cake as stale ... unless someone's fed you one of those Italian things & called it fruit cake ... wossit called again ... Panettone, that's it. But that ain't fruit cake.

Personally, I like deep fried chocolate covered brussel sprouts washed down with a sardine milkshake.......but who cares ?
The seafood can go die in a fire regardless of whether it's even Oak brand, but without tasting it I'm not dissing the chocolate-coated Brussels sprouts! Do you use a milk chocolate, or a dark? I usually prefer milk, but I think as a vegetable coating the dark would suit better ... ?

To be fair, most of the tangental discussion has revolved around Vegemite so one can argue that it was on topic. Kind of... 😇
 
I recently switched to Promite. It it easier to spread and tastes nicer. And cheaper. MY larger size Vegimite jars when they went stale - were just off and difficult to spread. All this because vegimite went from a staple to a luxury priced product - that it never was. They new owner must be destroying unsold product since the supermarket leaders wont sell anything older than 6 months or so. I expect TimTam's are also destroying overpriced stock. Last time I went OS I was commanded to buy mint sauce, as the American kind was bright green jelly, possibly 90% corn syrup.
 

Yep its made of dried fruit (including the coughpiest of them all sultanas ewww) which are full of sulphates, drenched in less than premium alcohol and stored for months. Nothing remotely fresh about it.

I can and I just did. It goes back to an era pre refrigeration., stodgy and heavy and old.

Yes agree Stateside bread might as well be called Cake. However Safeway (at least in CO), would make proper in-house French baguettes. They would come out oven fresh and warm at 5pm each day. Was great in winter. There is now a CO friend who has a 500g Vegemite in his pantry. Warm baguette + Vegemite converted him

panettone is also vile.
What's the attraction?. As soon as it's opened it becomes stale.

We had an overseas backpacker serve us breakfast at a cafe. Hubby asked for vegemite on toast. It came out so thick and was inedible. Guess they had never actually tried it themselves.

My younger son hates Vegemite. We went to Darling Harbour during the 2000 Olympics and there was a US film crew asking kids about Vegemite. He was with twin friends and they were all aged 10. He wanted to be on TV so for the camera he ate a slice of bread with Vegemite. He's never eaten it again.

All of my family, down to two year olds, ❤️ christmas pudding and most (not me) love mince pies.

Now I have a confession to make. I , Australian born and raised, also hate vegemite! It tastes like salty axle grease. My wife, children, grandchildren, siblings and so forth all happily eat it.

Despite some totally incorrect assumptions based on personal preferences, yes people of various ages enjoy fruit cake, my three granddaughters under 17 polished a whole one off with custard when they stayed a couple days in November. Had to buy another for guests in December.

When in Morocco last year and a bout of food poisoning, heavy toasted french baguette with smeared Vegemite and hot black tea with honey was the only thing on the agenda for 3-4days
