OP if it's all on the one ticket you should be fine to be checked through & transit airside at T1 in Sydney, per @serfty's advice above.
From memory many years ago I successfully argued a ~30 minute change on an international departure before, using the excuse that there was now not enough time between by (separate booking) incoming flight. 5 minutes you might struggle with but the policy is not really clear. Let us know how you go.

I actually think LCCs have it much easier on themselves & for passengers. Almost everyone knows what to expect & they aren't necessarily tied down to the legacy systems or way of doing things.
