I had a look online and it seems that refunded points can take 2-3 months to be depositied. I think what you describe probably won't work unless you have enough points for both tickets.

Do you need to have enough points for both the advange plus the saver? Or when the saver clears can you cancel the advantage booking and use those points for the saver?

No, I booked a through service with connecting flights. Perhaps the flights you were looking at had fare rules that didn't permit a same-day arrival and departure (transit)?
