The End of the Dixon Dynasty

The reign of the Dixon Dynasty is officially over as incoming Qantas boss Alan Joyce takes over. Some aviation analysts are heralding the change as a generational shift, however Joyce has made it abundantly clear that the only difference between him and the departing Geoff Dixon, is an Irish accent.

Joyce has so far managed to avoid commenting on his possible successor at Jetstar, or the

make-up of his new executive team. He has, however, hinted that a merger with another airline is a strong possibility. "A lot of airlines are not economic if they stand alone. Consolidation is a way for a lot of airlines to go on in the future,'' he said.

The new boss has also pledged to continue the airline's strategy to cede more Qantas domestic routes to its low-cost carrier Jetstar. He also said he would not be afraid of converting Jetstar routes to Qantas routes in a bid to catch the business market.

The 42 year old Irishman and founding CEO of Jetstar, was considered a distant third choice after the airlines general manager John Borghettic and chief financial officer Peter Gregg. The man dubbed by the media as the “lucky leprechaun” will officially take the reins in November.
